    Hi,

does anyone have a solution to stopping your dishwasher rusting you knives??

I have a set of newbridge cutlery and for some reason the knives keep on getting rust spots after they have been washed!! The spoons and forks seem to be grand.

I dont want to hand wash the knives seperately!!

    Cheers

I have Newbridge and have had no problem with the dish-washer, try Finish 3in1. I wouldn't put the specialist knives in (carving, boning knives etc.).

I used to have some other cutlery (a wedding present) that rusted in the dish-washer, put it in the bin.

Some say hard water, which is probably true but thats hard to correct. We have that problem and excess lime. However we swtiched to non critrus tablets, rinse aid and that mainly cured it for us.

    Thanks again;)

make sure you have salt in the machine as it minimises on the hard water and the lime, rinse aid is a must too.

I would check the water temp is high enough. It needs to evaporate off very fast, otherwise take the knives out at the end of the cycle and hand dry them

Sometimes cutlery can begin to rust in the hot moist atmosphere of the drying cycle. Always try to remove cutlery from the machine as quickly as possible after cycle completion or open the door after drying. When the wash is finished, we always remove the cutlery baskets but leave everything else to dry in the machine

As presumably the cutlery is stainless steel, then I'd be almost certain this is caused by washing other non-stainless metal items in the same load. I experienced this problem - rust transferred onto the stainless steel items. The good news is the spots fade & eventually disappear in subsequent washes, provided you stop washing the things which rust in the dishwasher. Look for rust on things like potato mashers, fish slices, baking tins, etc.

    Branners - any progress?

    Branners - any progress?

    Just to update..

I put on a wash today and took the cutlery thing out at the end of the wash and the knives looked fine. But I cant see myself remembering every time to do this!!

The plan is to buy some finish 3 in 1 - the non citrus ones!! I will make sure that none of the other stuff being washed is rusty, even though the machine is pretty old so it could be the culprit!!

If I'm still having problems then I'll just replace the newbridge expensive cutlery with some cheap crap!! I wonder if there is anything I should be treating the stainless steel cutlery with so as to maintain them?? I must have a look in the shop the next time I am there.

Again many thanks for all the opinions and suggestions;)

A few weeks ago, I was watching an episode of "How Clean Is Your House?"

The ladies showed the house owner how to remove the rust from his knives. All he had to do was cut an onion with them. (They had previously removed the skin of the onion.) The rust was absorbed by the onion immediately.

I haven't tried this myself yet so I don't know if it would work for you. Obviously, you would then discard the onion! It won't prevent the rusting but it might treat it.

IN the instruction manual of my new dishwasher, it went through how to go through a process of adjusting the amounts of salt used in the water. This was dependant on how hard the water was, which is why it also came with a litmus paper and comparison key chart.

So I just make sure there is salt and rinse aid in the washer. And use Original Finish.
The 3-in-1 Finish are of course all 3 items combined, but the levels of each would presumably be lower than having the 3 seperately (particularly not enough if water is hard)

I find all rinse aid only stops the glass from streaking and salt doesn't make much difference at all. Our dishwasher has a switch to help with hard water, dunno exactly what it does though. We eliminated the rust by not using the lemon 3in1 tablets and just use the plain one. Recently we say the rust again, and it was because of some dishwasher fresher thingy that the other half put in. It was citrus. But I assume not everone's water the same, so the solution may be different for other people.

Folks you're wasting your moolah on that Finish stuff - get the 4 in 1 tabs from Lidl they're just as good and much cheaper! Also I don't seem to have that rust problem anymore funnily enough

Got the plain finish 3 in 1 today, was €8 for 64 which wasnt too bad..

I had been using the cheap lidl ones so I'll be able to tell you in a while if there is a difference!!
