Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I don't know if Intertoto is a good idea, especially if we don't sign at least 6 or 8 players

So you'd prefere us to decline intertoto and just have another go at 5th next year?

Even if it compramises our league performance next year its still worth the shot at playing in europe, it will enable us to attract better quality players.

Pants West ham have equalised. I doubt it will matter anyway.

Ashton scores 2-2 but Intertoto still for Villa

To get a place in Europe how many games do you have to play in the Intertoto how early do you have to start pre-season training?

i told you, you have to play 2 games, one home one way

win that tie and youre in the uefa

the intertoto match is a week before the league season starts afaik

It's only two in the intertoto if I'm not mistaken, and as mon said the games are around the same time as preseason friendlys would be anyway and it's doubtfull it will be against teams that we would have to play premiership quality football to beat.

Two games. The draw is here.

We'd be playing the winners of Match K - NIR/FIN v DEN. First leg: 19/20 July. Second leg: 26/27 July.

Who are the North's reps in Intertoto? Who are Finland's and Denmark's?

It's a very early pre-season but that mightn't hurt either. We were playing in America in July last year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,951 ✭✭✭✭Villain

Ah well thats not so bad then I thought it was 3 or 4 games the way they were talking not going on a pre-season tour

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,924 ✭✭✭shoutman

Whatever happens I'd love to get an away trip in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,452 ✭✭✭Time Magazine

    Season over.

    Played 38
    Won 16
    Drew 12
    Lost 10
    Scored 71
    Conceded 51
    Points 60 - 6th place

Well done Martin O'Neill. Well done Aston Villa.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,951 ✭✭✭✭Villain

Yep good season lets build now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,924 ✭✭✭shoutman

6th place in the league, Birmingham City relegated.

I think everyone would of taken that at the start of the year.

Lets hope we hang onto Gaz Baz and bring in some quality signings.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,661 ✭✭✭✭Helix

    right

so we're playing the winner of cliftonville/mypa v 3rd place in the danish league in the twobob

could be copenhagen who finish third, that wont be a coast by any stretch

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,924 ✭✭✭shoutman

There is no such thing as a guaranteed victory but I couldn't see any danish side being capable of a mid table finish in the premiership.

It's better for us that its two legs as opposed to just a one game final.

We have to play qualification games in the second round to get into the UEFA proper after we win out Intertoto games.
So we do need a good few players coming in.

But Well done. Big improvement this year.

    .

    no we dont

if you win the intertoto you go into the first round of the uefa, which is another 2 legged tie, before the second round which is the group stage

dont confuse the first round with the qualifiers, theyre different things

    Would you lads like Doyle?

Well I got it from Wikipedia,
The UEFA Cup starts with two knockout qualifying rounds held in July and August. Participants from associations ranked 18 and lower enter the first qualifying round, and participants from associations ranked 9-18 join them in the second qualifying round. In addition, three places in the first qualifying round are reserved for the Fair Play winners, and eleven places in the second qualifying round are reserved for the UEFA Intertoto Cup winners.

Can't see why Villa would go for Doyle certainly not as first choice.

Nope if we win we go into the UEFA Cup second qualifying round then there is the first round and then the group stage

    id have hunt tho

    Would you lads like Doyle?

    you offering?

id be happy to see Doyle at VP although id say others have the sights set higher. He would not be a guranteed starter anyway but on the cheap would be a fine replacemenrt/improvement on Luke Moore.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,924 ✭✭✭shoutman

I'd like to think our standards are higher then doyle, and we dont need a replacement for moore.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,103 ✭✭✭estebancambias

But perhaps with Villa Doyle would actually develop, like Ashley Young has.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,792 ✭✭✭✭JPA

I really dislike Hunt. All action with no skill or technique.

with 7 players on the bench next season hes an ideal impact player if needed

I'd like Doyle as competition for Gabby if he could be got for £5m or less. Carew, Gabby, Doyle and Harewood sounds pretty good.

Though we're scoring for fun. Need to focus on other areas of the pitch. Here's a bit of a wishlist for the summer:

    Jens Lehmann/Jussi Jääskeläinen
    Brad Guzan
    Miguel
A young RB, maybe Richard Stearman
A CB to challenge with Zat
A quality MR like Shaun Wright-Phillips
    An attacking/creative MC
    A challenge to Gabby/Kevin Doyle

That'd give us a squad of...

    GK
    Jussi Jääskeläinen
    Brad Guzan
    Stuart Taylor

    Defenders
    Bouma
    O'Halloran
    Knight
    Laursen
    Davies
    New centre-half
    Miguel
    Stearman

    Midfielders
    Young
    Maloney
    Barry
    Reo-Coker
    Petrov
    New CM
    Salifou
    Wright-Phillips
    Routledge
    Gardner

    Forwards
    Gabby
    Carew
    Doyle
    Harewood
    Delboy

I think that's a team that could challenge for the UEFA Cup, have a run in the FA/League Cup and secure 5th.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,924 ✭✭✭shoutman

I think to secure fifth we would need a bit more quality to be honest. Would Doyle make it into the Everton team?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,661 ✭✭✭✭Helix

i dont care about 5th next season, i want 66 points

if we finish 9th with that by some freak i dont care

i wanted 60 this term, and we got it, so i want 66 to keep the improvement going

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,452 ✭✭✭Time Magazine

Not every player in our side would have to get into Everton's side for us to get 5th. And aside from that, Doyle would be a challenger for Gabby. Could see him taking his place, but he wouldn't be a dead-set starter. Gabby was really showing the strain during certain matches this season, we need a replacement. If we spend say £5m on a player like Doyle then that's a lot more cash to spend on a right-back and right winger who are more needed imho.

    So you'd rather 66 in 9th than 65 and 5th? :D

    yup

we need to start 100% focussing on our own targets and reaching them and not worrying about anyone else

points targets are always in your own hands, league positions are not

Doyle is a quality player, would not be surprised at all to see MON after him he's the quintessential MON kind of player and esp now with Reading gone I'd say Doyle will be off.

Great season, all things considered. Intertoto will be an experience anyway :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,154 ✭✭✭✭Neil3030

I'd have reservations about Doyle. Haven't seen enough Reading games to see what his contributions have been like off the ball, but going 20 games this season without scoring is awful, Sidwell or no Sidwell.
