Graphics card: Geforce 7900GS 256MB (375mhz core, 500mhz mem default clocks) bios flashed to 650mhz core, 575mhz mem :)

    5117 3dmarks06

thats some 300 marks higher than the way more expensive 512MB 7900GTXgo

    turkster

thats a very good mark ! dont think i have the guts to bios flash the gs, dont think dell would like it much if it did go up in smoke.....!
i have no idea what the cooling system is like on the xps so dont know how far i can go, by the way where did you get your bios clocking from? site?

  • Registered Users Posts: 15 turkster

The 7900GS is a lovely clocker and I could prob tweak settings to get a slightly better score at those clocks but the card is pretty much maxed out at that and and I start getting artifacts if i push it much further.

Cooling is good on xpsm1710 as it has dual pipe cooler for gfx card same as for the 7900GTX. So it can handle the extra heat of upping the voltage and pushing the core clocks so far. Temps are reasonable at that clock no more than 80c during games (eg FEAR, Oblivion) which is not far from temps of 7900GTX and similar to temps of 7950GX2. To be on the safe side i clocked it back to 610 core for everyday use but still get over 5000 in 3dmark 06

Notebookforums have a lot on overclocking 7900GS specifically this thread. You can extract your bios with nibitor and mod it manually or one of the members at notebookforums has created a bios flash cd with various overclocked images.

5242 on a 7900GT, good i suppose, but i had an X1900 and got 6K+ but screwed out of it and keep thinking back to that score.

What clocks have you got on the 7900GT to get that score AnCapaillMor?

Anti had an X1900 XTx for about 3 days then had to give it back.

As for the 7900, its an EVGA superclocked, it comes defaulted at 580 mhz with running at 1580mhz, its got a bigass heatsink and fan on it, runs on Hl2 EP1 at around 74 degrees. good thing about it is after 3 months and up to a year i can trade it up. highly recomend EVGA.

surprised at that, i tried other settings but 3dmark just hooked up, looks solid on this.

    I've got a new XFX 7950 xg2 last week (520/600 stock)
    I've got x2 4400+, DFI Lanparty UT SLI-DR Expert, 2GB OCZ platinum

The first score I got was around 5200 with everthing at stock.

I upped my fsb to 220 and the 7950 to 540/660 to see what I'd get (not worrying tooo much about stablility for now) ans I got around 6400.

So I'm gonna have to take some time off work and find a nice overclock on all my bits. Won't be able to permanently overclock the 7950 for the moment tho cos it runs too hot.

Does anyone else who has a 7950 think the drivers are pure ****e? I've tried 91.31(WHQL) and 91.33 & 91.45 (beta). I hope a future releases will give decent performance gains.

You should'nt have to OC it. i know 2 with 7950's that got above 7000.

Exactiv had the same problem here.

He seemed to get on best with the 91.37, which I haven't tried. I'll give them a shot. Thanks CapaillMor.

No my fan doesnt run on high a huge amount but dont think it stops comletely. Some games such as Oblivion and FEAR will get the gfx working harder than 3dmark 06 so, if you're worried, try running those gomes for an hour or so and see waht its like. 5291 is a nice score for those clocks. As a matter of interest are you running XP home?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,347 ✭✭✭legs11

    right turkster, its xp home.
i had to knock the clocks back abit, 3d mark frooze and i got artifacts on the ati tool, so i am getting around 5,100 marks now, with reduced settings. 585, and (550x2 mem). looks alright now.....

    Eureka!

I'm not 100% sure what was causing my problem but it seems to be sorted now. I had a raid 0 set up with two 80gb sata2 drives on the nf4. I wasn't happy with the performance so I took out one of the drives and obviously had to reinstall windows. The reinstall did the trick. I scored 7581 :) with everything at stock, whereas I was having to overclock before to get around 6500.

I am using 91.45. These seemed to be the best performers before the reinstall, but I was getting a BSOD on startup every evening when I fired up. I would have to reinstall the video driver every day before I could use my machine! I don't think it was anything to do with the raid. It was probably the nforce drivers I was using. I have no idea what version I was using but when I reinstalled I used one that I downloaded when I bought my motherboard. I'm not sure what version it is, 6.26 I think.

    Oblivion runs sweet now.

Now to overclock and get even better scores!

congrats...the 91.45 seem to be the best driver at the moment for the 7950gx2..oblivion looks sweet..now if only nvidia get off their ass and do AA+HDR..I had an X1900XTX before the 7950gx2 and Oblivion looked absolutely fabulous..
