Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

While in work,i managed to seriously damage my hand. It needs xrays as ive had broken bones before and know the feeling. The problem is our health insurance lapsed end of july and we are now in the process of switching to bupa. Its taking its time. The question i have is, how much do xrays and getting bandaged up cost? Im just looking for a rough cost, cos im not even sure if i can claim on insurance even when we are insured or if its worthwhile claiming( due to the excess we may have to pay)
Id appreciate all help,as i plan to head to the doctors 2moro for the letter referring me for xrays.

Why not go straight into the A&E tomorrow? It won't be too bad on a Tuesday morning. You will also save on the GP's fee. They just take your name and address and send you on the bill anyway and you can sort it out after re insurance. If it happened in work will they not be footing the bill anyway?

no,doubt work will cover it. it happened, and i assumed it was just a bruise/sprain-but 3days later its just getting worse. What im worried about is the fees. I thought if you got refered by a gp you didnt need to pay a certain fee. cant remeber exactly tho.was hoping someone could help me out.

OP, if bones are broken, your hand/wrist will need to be casted or if it's something more serious, the bones may need to be set.
You can be referred by your family doctor to the out-patients department of a public hospital for specialist assessment by a consultant or his or her team or for diagnostic assessments (i.e., x-rays, laboratory tests, physiotherapy, etc.). If you attend this service as a public patient, you will not have to pay for this service. If you wish to attend a consultant in a private capacity, you will be required to pay the appropriate fee.

Since 1 January 2006, the charge for out-patients, accident and emergency or casualty department of a public hospital without being referred there by your family doctor increased to 60 euro.

why you havent already been to hospital amazes me, espicially as you say it has gotten worse. Maybe a CT is needed too ?

well iv had 2 spectacular breaks in my time(bones protruding, piercing tissue and muscle),so this one doesnt seem to bad. Compared to a hair line fracture i had many years ago,i think its similar to that. Im no expert, but i am basing it on breaks that have happened to me.
I think its gotten worse, more so because i havnt bandaged it up fully and allowed it to heal.
I know i should have gone sooner, but my family situation at the moment is taking up alot of time and energy. Money is a major fighting point between parents (who are getting legally seperated) So iv had very little time to myself to think about me. Ill head down to vincents 2moro and see what happens

Just saw antis post-yes i agree i shouldv gone earlier but as said above with insurance trying to get sorted and family issues, i was worried about the cost.

thanks big jim for the link! youv saved me alot of running around!

Once you have a referral from your GP and ID, most hospitals are happy to bill you later.

go into any A&E and they do not expect you to pay there and then. bill is always sent out if you ask. and the usual payment time is 1 calender month, then you get a reminder. second reminder. final payment. court action. Dont ask how i managed to get this far :/

Moral is Health first, money second !

What costs are you talking about.

Normally you pay the fee at A&E and the rest you dont have to worry about ( xrays and stuff )

When I go to A&E for a broken bone ( last Feb ),I paid the 50 quid at reception and the rest is paid under the PRSI system

Im just amazed you can still type so well!!

Seriously though, its not gonna cost that much. I paid £50 when I got my appendix out. If I had gone through my VHI, it wouldve cost them £3500 and me £80 excess charge, Figure that?! If you dont go now, it WILL cost you more because they may need to re-set it, and then cast it. Also, how much money would you pay to get your hand back to the way it was? As was said, moral is, health first, money second.

Had 'a camera job' done 2 years ago ; top and (cough ...) bottom.
    Hospital bill -> 45 Euros.

The taxi fare there and back cost more ...

Update-went into vincents today. No queing-walked in,took details and i was seen straight away.this was at 12.30 or so. A bit of toing and frowing but by 330 i was out with a hairline fracture in my wrist. they put it in a reinforced splint and i have to go back in 10 days for more xrays to determine where to go from there. It cost 60e and i got two free splints (which wouldve cost me 20-30e each anyway). Its a major weight off my mind. They asked if intended to claim against my works insurance. I had never really thought about it. Doubt i will.

Yip, 6 0quid sounds about right
I was wondering why you were worried about high costs. They dont exist when you go to A&E really. You dont pay for xrays procedures etc etc if you are going in as a public patient. Now if you ring up and ask for a certain procedure, thats another ball game altogether, I can tell you !
