...what is the procedure for disposing of the body?

I have a 15 year old mongrel who has slowed up terribly. He's deaf, pretty blind and sleeps most of the day. Other than that, he's quite happy and still manages a little belt round the park in the morning, even if it means having to sleep for hours to recover.

He's not going to go on forever, I know that, but my question is, when he dies, do I ring the vet to take him away? I don't have any sort of garden I could bury him in - I'm not sure if that's even allowed.

Do vets have a service where they pick up dead pets? Sorry if this offends or upsets anyone.

A vet would usually take the pet away (for a fee of course)

I'm happy someone else brought this up as I've found it very hard to bring myself to post it.

I lost one of my two cats in a horrible way last Wednesday, I'd rather not go into details as I am still upset over it.

Anyway, she died in the vet on Wednesday evening and we arranged there and then for her to be cremated. The vet's office go through the proper channels and do this for you and then you just go and collect the ashes.

We will get our Polly back in a couple of weeks in a casket. I think the whole service including casket worked out at about €200, it maybe a little more for a dog.

Speak to your local vet, if they don't do it then they should be able to put you in contact with someone that does.

I've had 3 cats cremated so far. All have been individual cremations as I've wanted the ashes back. They cost €120 - €170 depending on the vet I used (different vets using different crematoriums).

I've had a few rabbits cremated too but they were mass cremations so I didn't get the ashes back. (I'd have buried them in the garden but one of the foster dogs we had at the time was a digger :( )
