Can I get onto the internet??

Someone I know has bought one of these

with the intention of being able to get onto the internet with it, even tho they dont have broadband...apparently it will pick up a connection, is this true??

Yes.

IF someone else has set up a wireless 802.11 network within range,
AND whoever the person that you know has given permission to access said network,
AND the network does not have encryption on it, or you were given the corresponding encryption key when you/your friend got permission.
