Lads need a bit of help here as networking is something i know very little about.

Right the story is ive moved to wales to help the mother with renovation work. She has tiscali ( i know ) with a usb modem :/ There no ethernet port on it at all. So Is there a way to connect my laptop, using cat5 obviously. I think its called ad-hoc or something. I think i understand the principles behind it. i use the main pc ( which im on now ) as a gateway. but how do i do this ?

I dont fancy going fiddeling about in things i dont know. So can someone explain how i can do this ?

    Thanks in advance

Do both PC's have Wireless? you'll need this if you want to use Ad-hoc

npoe no wireless on the main pc, just on the laptop. Can i not use the ethernet porn on the pc to directly connect to the laptop with cat5 ?

Yes you can but it'll need to be a crossover Cat5 Cable not a straight through unless you have a hub/switch.
For Win XP, in your internet connections select the USB Broadband connection and enable sharing. XP Sets up a mini DHCP Server when sharing is enabled so it should simply a matter of connecting the two together.

don't think it will come together quite as easy.
had to try something similar here before i got a switch.
using ntl modem into the main pc bought ways (as i had two ethernet cards in it).
had to bridge the connection. can't remember exactly now but it was annoying.

    stupid question:
if its just to get internet why not just connect straight to the modem?

The modem only has one port which is usb ....... My mother ordered it....... And i need 2+ pcs and a laptop running off it. If i can share it with the ssecond pc i should be able to share with the laptop as the second pc has dual gig lan
