It was 11/10 for Damien but it seems to be split now...

Just saw this... and tbh after laughing off some of the comments I checked him out. AMAZING, and definitely the best I've seen on any of the Idol shows which I usually abhor. This guy is able to go from Unchained Melody to Creep to Nessun Dorma without missing a note. I'll admit, my jaw actually dropped when I was watching Nessun Dorma... WOW.

As the judge says at the end, he was given this a WEEK before the performane and the guy had never studied Italian before in his life. Give this man from Co. Kildare, Ireland the respect he deserves. ;)

I thought he was G4 like not great, although the creep was awful, no force behind his voice in either of them.

im listening to wicked game, its terrible too,

a good choice of songs, no bridge over troubled water tired choices but still not great

The chart success of former Idols has been dubious to say the least. Previous winners (and runners-up) have had a big TV platform to launch their music careers although it appears to be a case of diminishing returns from the franchise overall as record sales are not as high as expected.

Last years Idol winner hasn't even launched an album yet! Her album has been put back until 2007, the first such delay in the shows history.

In past years the Idol winner would be rushed into the studio, recording an album — of questionable quality — in less than a week to meet demand in the hot pre-Christmas CD market.

I am not one usually for pop music but have to admit I was drawn to Damien Leith's acoustic sound straight away. Irregardless of whether you like his style or not I think that his sound has lasting appeal and you will be hearing a lot more from him on Irish radio.

Hang on a sec. What do you mean by "his" sound? He's doing cover versions for Christ's sake!! And doing them on a Australian Reality TV Show. A country that's not exactly reknowned for producing musical artists of any great note (excuse the pun). Time for a little perspective methinks. He might have a decent voice but there's millions out there that do as well.

And as for hearing alot more of him on Irish radio? I wouldn't hold my breath. He's made it to the final and afaik Tony Fenton has mentioned him once in passing on his radio show. Hardly the next Damian Rice.

This years finalist alongside Damien Leith (Jessica Mauboy) is half Koori.

The previous winner of the show two years ago (Kasey Donovan) is Koori.

    Hi

I'm an Aussie, and was just googling Leith after hearing him win on Oz Idol. Just wanted to let you guys know the good news. He's amazing! By far and away the best they've had on that show. It'll probably be in the papers over there tomorrow, but you guys have a head start :-)

If by "go on" you mean that you're gonna mention some musicians that people outside of Australia have actually heard of, well then by all means do "go on"

    Fair play to him.

Good lad Damien! Based on the few performances I've seen, I knew he would win it. :)

BaZmO - I am well aware that Crowded House are actually a kiwi band as much as Australians would love them to be home-grown

As for Jack Johnson, not sure why the OP put his name as being Aussie??

Surprisingly you raise an interesting point...

There seems to be a tendency of countries like Australia (and Britain) to adopt talent from other countries once that person has been living in the country for any length of time. I touched on it a bit here.

It used to really bugger me off whenever I heard a British TV presenter refer to a certain Irish Band as British. Already this is starting in Australia. Damien went on record just before the show to say that next year he would becoming an Australian citizen.

I understood this to mean that he was possibly aware of the fact that people might see him as being a foreigner and not fully accept him and thus jeopardize his chances of winning Australian Idol. It is interesting that on his My Space page he considers himself a Grass roots Irish / Australian musician and songwriter.

Just think BaZmO now that its all over you won't have me to add meaning to your life! ;)

Nope. They were born in the Isle of Man, then moved to Manchester and then moved to Australia.

Anyway, believe it or not I'm actually delighted for the guy I really am. I just had a issue with the way some of the posters here were wetting themselves over the prospect of the new musical saviour that is Damien Leith, a reality TV star that has a decent voice and does cover versions. I'll hold off on calling him the next best thing until he's at least released a few original songs of any note.

Damien went on record just before the show to say that next year he would becoming an Australian citizen.
    Hmmm... that's odd.
