I understand what you're saying about ILTG not being Comp Services and therefore stuff like servers etc is out of their remit. But the fact they blaitently lie by saying to a student they can not use a Mac is not on.

There is no reasonable reason why a student can not use a Mac laptop in Quinn. The Mac is able to meet the min ILTG required specs (min RAM, HD, run Office etc).

The idea of the laptop programme in Quinn is that a lecturer in a class can say today we use a certain program or look at a website or whatever. This simply won't work if the gear the students are using is not pretty much the same. So people are supposed to have Windows PCs and not macs. So the ILTG probably say to people that they do not support macs and that Macs don't meet the requirement for Commerce students. If you want to register your mac with the computer centre, you can do so but the ILTG have no more to do with it than the canteen.

It'd be quite ok if they said 'you want to put it on the network, fine, but don't call us if it doesn't work', but it seems they say no.

If you try and get onto the UCD network with a macbook, the first thing they tell you is that they don't support macbooks. Then, when you've argued with them for a few weeks about it, they ask you if your laptop is safe enough (ie what AV you have). If you don't say, "Sophos", they say, "Well, you'll have to get Sophos."

Now, it could be just that I've only ever dealt with ILTG in Quinn, but this is my understanding of the situation.
Strangely, on the student laptop programme here, it also says that after registering the laptop ¨Our support team will check to see that the correct anti-virus and security software is installed¨, however as mentioned before other av´s and firewalls do work fine.
