Male Female ratio of atheists?

Is it just me, or does anybody else agree that the male:female ratio of atheists, tends to be way over on the male side? i.e. athesists are usually men, the minority are female. My evidence is purely anecdotal, I have no statistically evidence, so this is just my own observation.
Your opinions please.

And if so, why do you think this is?

Agnosticism is the only logical "belief" system.

More men are logical beings than women.

Ergo most Agnostics are men.

It seems curious considering the role in society given to women by religion.

Not sure a poll would prove anything here TBH. Though more of the regulars would be male, that could be due to any number of factors. (More male nerds, anyone? )

I think it's a reasonably fair generalistaion The Atheist. Men do tend to make their decisions based on logic rather than "intuition" or "faith" more than women. At least that's been my experience anyway. I can't claim to have met every woman in Dublin, never mind Ireland or the world.

This is a real interesting issue. I too tend to feel that there are more male than female atheists. And I also notice that no matter which belief a female takes, she tend to be more focused on that belief than the men.

Well if you look at the Jewish and Christian faiths it is traditionaly the mother who acts as a foot soldier of sorts for the church and ensures that the family goes to mass and keeps the household religious.

Again... a lot of that has been shifting in recent years.

Luckily we have the CSO who does these 'straw polls' for us on a regular basis!

The 2006 census is still being counted, but the figures from 2002 are:

Male   Female
No religion    82,262  56,002
Not stated     83,375  79,094

So yes there are significantly more men who answer 'no religion' than women.

Balls. Now I feel bad. They should really give us an optional extra page to fill in. Detailing in full precisely what we do and dont believe in. Id like them to see them count that.

Its just beautiful that it takes two athiests to reach out and use something as basic and timeless as the universal greeting to communicate a message of mutual respect without enforcing a religion or a belief structure. See that?
