Champions League draw

The draw is tomorrow at 5pm Irish time (strange time). I get really excited when Celtic are in the draw but they're usually always in a tough group so hopefully it changes this year.

    Pot 1:
    Barcelona
    AC Milan
    Real Madrid
    Inter
    Liverpool
    Arsenal
    Manchester United
    Valencia

    Pot 2:
    Olympique Lyon
    FC Porto
    PSV Eindhoven
    Bayern München
    Chelsea
    AS Roma
    Celtic
    Lille OSC

    Pot 3:
    Sporting Lisbon
    Benfica
    Girondins Bordeaux
    Steaua Bucuresti
    Werder Bremen
    Olympiakos
    CSKA Moscow
    AEK Athens

    Pot 4:
    Anderlecht
    Dinamo Kiev
    Levski Sofia
    Shakhtar Donetsk
    Galatasaray
    Hamburger SV
    Spartak Moscow
    FC Copenhagen

Just glimpsing at that I'd fancy one of the English teams for the craic. Maybe Steaua from Pot 3 and Copenhagen from the bottom. Copenhagen can't be a bad team if they can beat Ajax 2-0 in Amsterdam. They've a few known players like Gronkjaer, Linderoth and Allback.
I suppose everyone outside of Pot 2 will want to be drawn with Celtic and I don't blame them. :)

Hamburg is definitly the team to avoid in pot 4.

Lyon, Benfica and Hamburg would be a nigthmare draw. WOuldnt like werder from pot 3 either.

I'd go along with that. Shakhtar destroyed Celtic the last time they played in the Ukraine so I'd love to avoid them. Half their team are Brazilians and then they have quality like Srna, Aghahowa and Tymoschuk.

I wonder what odds you'd get on that. It would be just our luck...

Well they've a 7/1 chance of getting them so the bookies would give you about half that. :)

Not officially but a bookie would be foolish to refuse a bet if you asked for 7/2. :)

nah it always works out that united get the piss easy group

    arsenal get the hard group

    liverpool get the tricky grouo

and who cares about chelsea, they're not seeded, they have cooties

i'll go out on a limb and predict the united group

    man utd
    Girondins Bordeaux
    Anderlecht
    Lille OSC

I presume Chelsea are still being punished from the days they lost to unknowns in the UEFA Cup pre-Roman Abramovich. As their record in last 3 seasons is not bad.

From a Man Utd point of view, I'd like to avoid Benfica in Pot 3 and Galatasary in pot 4(due to their scary homeground)

Pot 2 seems full of good teams, but I'd like to avoid Lyon and Bayern

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,482 ✭✭✭RE*AC*TOR

would like liverpool to avoid Bayern and Eindhoven from Pot2 and Benfica from pot3.

Other than that its Pot Luck.

I don't see two many easy teams in any pot to be fair. Some easier than others but I'd raise serious eyebrows if anyone managed to get a walkover in all three pots.

As p.pete posted, some juicy match ups so far. Barca vs Chelsea (I'm looking forward to this one), Inter vs Bayern, Real vs Lyon and Man Utd vs Celtic! It looks like a very entertaining group stage so far.

Liverpool - PSV.... Still, at least we bought Kuyt off them (and thev've lost one or two others as well, afaik)

I think United will be very happy drawing Celtic... of all the teams in pot 2, everyone was eyeing up Celtic.

Not too bad, Benfica will be akward.
Liverpool have the easiest group along with Milan,
    Chelseas would be the toughest

Go to UEFA.com and click the "Draw - live now" banner at the top of the page.

I'm pretty satisfied with Milan's group so far, Lille and AEK Athens.

    Group H
    AC MILAN
    Lille
    AEK Athens
    Anderlecht

But i suppose the golden rule is dont count your chickens b4 they hatch.

United, Celtic, Benfica and Copenhagen... I'll take that :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 15,552 ✭✭✭✭GuanYin

Hrmm, Arsenal played CSKA Moscow and Hamburg before, right? Chelsea-barca again, hrmmm do they mix these balls at all?

I don't think Celtic have anything to fear.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,103 ✭✭✭Revalco

Could have been alittle better for Celtic, but they stand agood chance.

Was thinking the same think psi, same teams year after year.

At least Celtic have a good chance of at least UEFA cup football after Christmas as Copenhagen are one of the weaker teams.

Lou Macari didn't seem to know what he was talking about on SSN. He said Man U should expect 6 points from Celtic based on pre-season. Celtic played most of their 2nd team against Utd's youths in that match and Europe is a different story. It'll be very tough for Utd to get 3 points at Celtic park.
He then went on to say that it's a good draw for Celtic and if they'd have been put in any other group they wouldn't have a hope. Did he ever actually see Benfica play?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,589 ✭✭✭✭Necronomicon

Certainly not the worst United could have asked for. Easier than last season imo, although I would like to have avoided Benfica. Celtic games should have a great atmosphere.
Major lol at Chelsea vs Barca AGAIN. Well, at least they can't draw each other in the knockouts for the third year running :)
