Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Ajax out of CL

Ajax crashed out of the UEFA Champions League after a shock 2-0 home defeat to FC Copenhagen on Wednesday, the Danish side winning 3-2 on aggregate.

Ajax started the game as heavy favourites after a 2-1 win a fortnight ago in Denmark but were sent packing thanks to a freak own goal by Thomas Vermaelen.

In the first half Ajax dominated and created a hatful of chances with Gabri guilty of missing two golden opportunities within a minute of each other. The midfielder's first effort came in the 43rd minute when he struck a powerful shot from the edge of the area, but it was tipped over by Jesper Christiansen.

From the resulting corner Gabri struck another shot from eight yards but his effort was superbly cleared off the line by Tobias Linderoth.

Copenhagen came out all guns blazing in the second half and desperately sought the two goals they needed to qualify. They were rewarded in the 59th minute when Linderoth played in a free kick from the left hand side to the far post where Michael Silberbauer was waiting to head home.

Twenty minutes later the Danish side scored the winner after William Kvist played a ball into the box from the right and Vermaelen slid in to intercept the cross but the ball deflected off the defender and looped into his own net.

Ajax then threw everyone forward in search of an equaliser and almost snatched one when Mauro Rosales' cross was headed against the bar by Klaas Jan Huntelaar from eight yards.

But Copenhagen held on to secured the unlikeliest of upsets and they will now progress to the group stage of the Champions League, earning themselves and estimated 18 million euros in the process.

Ajax had a cracking team out and would have been a great addition to the CL, but im kinda glad as they finished 4th in their league and went into a mad play off for 2nd to 5th for the CL spot.

Cork would have beaten Copenhagen too imo :(

Ajax don't deserve to be in the CL and it's a real pity AZ aren't there. They would have been a great addition to it but they're stuck with UEFA cup football for the 3rd year in a row.
