Burning eyes

Since I was 14 I have experienced a burning, sore feeling in my eyes when exposed to radiation, in particular television, computers and bright light.Several doctors found no irregularity and for years the problem went undiagnosed. Eventually an opthalmic surgeon told me that I was suffering from senisitivity to Ultra Violet radiation. I was prescribed U.V. coated glasses and gel. Newer L.C.D. televisions and computer screens are less severe...and I also use a filter screen. However the problem remains significant..I am unable to work in an I.T. enviroment and driving remains beyond me. What's most frustrating is that my eye specialist feels I should be able to work in I.T....but over a number of hours the discomfort becomes unbearable...and clearly cannot be healthy. I am also blinded in bright sunlight..or even bright electric lights. In short it has greatly restricted my life. Has anyone experienced similar problems? Alan 27

maybe NCBI may have some information or have you contacted them already? http://www.ncbi.ie/main/contact_us.php they deal with visual impairments. I think you may be entitles to an allowance aswell http://oasis.gov.ie/health/health_related_benefits_and_entitlements/blind_welfare_allowance.html

There are new lenses on the market which filter out blue light which causes glare. It might be a good idea to check them out, they've made a huge different in the lives of a number of people I know and I am considering getting them myself.

Ardkeen opticians in Waterford do them, as does Gerald O'Connor opticians in Cork. I would suggest that you maybe consider getting wrap around glasses, like sports person wear as this will prevent light entering the side of the spectacles, which would make any lens coating you may currently have pointless.

Filan, may I ask why in your first post on this forum you claimed to be 65 years old and now you claim to be 27? It seems a little odd to me.

I am 27, my mother is 65 and I placed an entry for her once or twice, simple, if you observe more closely you will see that I never wrote Alan 65, it was always M or Maureen 65. Alan 27

Well it was the fact that you wrote "I am 65" and never mentioned you were posting on behalf of your mother that made me curious.

A problem in terms of allowance is that a number of specialists have found nothing wrong...and the Opthalmic Surgeon who did make a diagnosis downplays it's severity...claims I should be able to work in Information Technology...but I.T. causes me huge discomfort when used for longer than a very brief duration...and therefore can't work in a job with a significant computer element...and in this Information Age I am hugely restricted...and was frequently unemployed despite having attained high educational standards. Thus I would struggle to get a doctor to certify my ailments...which is very frustrating. The worst type of problem is one which is undiagnosable. My friend sometimes goes a week without going to the toilet and experiences pain, yet doctors find no irregularity. I lack faith in the medical profession. Any further suggestions? Alan
