Many fans? I personally love them. Wonderful Rainbow and Hypermagic Mountain are brilliant albums. The drummer is amazing.

Really?? My friend bought the Ride The Skies album blindly and we listened to it and it was one of the most unlistenable things I've ever heard. If someone told me the cd was scratched, I would have believed them. As if they were taking the piss!

    Or maybe I'm missing something...?

Saw them play at Whelan's a few months ago. They were unbelievably tight but the sound was sludgey and way too loud. The result was that my ears got fatigued after about 40 minutes and I just wanted it to be over. They're up to something interesting, though - no question about it.

I've heard some great music that sounds like the CD is skipping! Ever heard of Oval?

What do this Lightning Bolt crowd sound like anyway?

    Noisey. Very noisey.

Oval are/were a German trio that specialise in sparse, glitchy electronica. I have their album "94 Diskont". It's pretty good stuff.

As for Lightning Bolt, think frenetic thrash metal bass riffs (occasionally augmented with an octave pedal to approximate a lead guitar) locked in to furiously pummeled drums. The vocals are yelled into a very low-fi mike, of the type you might find in Hector Grey's, and treated with distortion so they sound not entirely unlike a demented Fianna Fail TD on speedballs doing the campaign trail with a megaphone in a Cortina c. 1983.

Bastard, I'd have given anythig to go to that gig :(

Anyone see the ad for some program on channel 6 recently? They use 2 morro morro land as background music and it actually works really well.

I think once you get used to Lightning Bolt's noise factor they're amazing. Kick ass riffs, amazing drumming and strange vocals, they rock!

I listen to the first album a lot when I get sick of what I'm normally into.

There's a feeling you get when Zone meet And Beyond that you can't get from conventional rhythm n' melody.

I forget where I read it but in a review of Death From Above 1979 they referred to them as "Po-lightning Bolt" - Best Pun Ever!

    Heheh, great pun indeed!

Another Lightning Bolt-ish band (with a bit more oomph to them than LB if you can imagine it) is Mikaela's Fiend. I got their We Can Driving Machine album recently and it makes my face explode. Loud as hell.
