I am about to go on a DVD buying bender, and what I really want are some genuinly scary films. at the top of the list is The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, as it is the film that got me into horror, and it is brilliantly done. I don't want any artsy-fartsy ones that you have to think about, the types of films I am looking for would be like Wolf Creek, or the classics like Halloween, but without the horrid acting (which is more scary then Mike Myers). so any input would be welcomed

Thought the Chainsaw was brutal, I haven't seen a genuinely scary horror flick in years, I think I'm unshockable these days. Would love to watch one that has me petrified though so if you do come across a good one, let me know.

I do find that ones that mess with your head are the worst (i.e. Blair Witch, it could be cos I live in a quiet area with a lot of land around). Don't like ones that are just a pure gore fest.

The Descent, that had such potential but it just went ridiculous, had they have left out the creatures and kept with the head messing, it would have been great IMO

The first time I watched The Blair Witch I was crapping myself, I fell for the story hook, line and sinker. By the end I was clutching the chair arms so tight I could feel it about to rip. Ever sinse I found out it was all just fiction Iit doesn't scare me.

Oh and if you are looking for a film that messes with your head you want Wolf Creek, there are a few jump moments and a lot of suspense

I had a look at that, I never saw any of them before and so would be a bit weary about buying them just encase. do you know where you could get Ringu? I see The Ring all over Amazon but can't find Ringu

    That's because it's called 'Ring' ;)

The Descent is pretty much the only good horror I've seen in past year!

  • Registered Users Posts: 640 ✭✭✭CraggyIslander

Don't forget the evil dead 1 and 2. and check out the old Wes Craven ones like hills have eyes and last house on the left. Or John Carpenters the fog and the thing.

Not the 200x remakes of course, the original 1970s/1980s ones still rock!

I can't recommend The Devil's Rejects enough if you're into the 70's style horror, which it seems you are considering you mention the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,372 ✭✭✭The Bollox

I have Evil Dead 1 and 2, they are great for pointless gore.

I do not want to watch the re-make of The Hills Have eyes, but couldn't find the original in any rental shops. I have heard it is brilliant, so I may put that on the list. I have heard nothing of Fog, the remake or the original so I probably won't be going for that.

    [edit]
I don't recall seeing any of Rob Zombies movies, but I hear he is remaking Halloween. I have found the film I shall be renting out tonight tho, The Devil's Rejects looks brilliant[/edit]

I'd say stay away from House of 1000 Corpses if you're looking to check out his work.

Oh, and avoid the Fog remake at all costs. The original is alright, but not worth buying. I think in any case, you should avoid remakes, they're almost always inferior.

I rented out The Devil's Rejects, and will give my review tomorrow

Give 'The descent' a go (7 euro in hmv). 'Dont look now' is also excellent, its a must see. Karl Hungus reccomended me a little known film a couple of years ago called 'Ravenous', its now one of my favourite movies! I highly reccomend it...

I assume you already have classics such as The Exorcist, The Shining & The Thing aye ?

p.s If you dont already own 'The Thing' go buy it now!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,372 ✭✭✭The Bollox

I do not own any of them unfortunatly. I hate the exorcist, it did nothing for me. I can safely say, without resorting to hyprbole that I watched The Shining about 1,000,000 times. I have never seen The Thing tho, except for the tiny pieces toy see in Halloween.

I am just after watching The Devil's Rejects and wow. personally I didn't know whether to laugh or not. I don't mean that in a bad way, but I found it hard to take the film seriously for most of it. When it gets going it's very good tho.
I felt pity for the family when they got captured by the cop, I really really wanted them to turn the tides on him. oh and wtf was with that bastardisation of Leatherface? who the hell was he?

I have a new problem, I have too many movies and not a big enough budget.

so far on the list are these:

    The Texas Chainsaw Massacre *
    The Fog
    The Thing
    Blue Velvet
    Don't Look now
    The Devil's Backbone
    Ring *
    Audition
    Battle Royale *
    The Descent
    Switchblade Romance
    Ichi The Killer
    Visitor Q

and I am sure there are others

could you help me trim the fat

    * will not be taken from the list*

I'd knock the following off the list:

    The Fog
    The Thing
    The Descent
    Visitor Q

And before anyone shouts at me for saying Visitor Q; it's a great film and worth buying, but it's in no way describable as a horror film so it may not be what you're looking for.

Carpenter's The Thing is also well worth getting, but it's generally easy enough to pick up for cheap so don't be in too much of a rush to get it. If you're looking to save bobs you can also go for the 1-disc edition of Ichi The Killer (I have to be honest, I've got the 2-disc edition and haven't watched much of the extra material but it's nice to know I can if I want to)

I'd knock The Fog off the list too to be honest, be it the original or the remake. I agree with Fysh that Visitor Q isn't so much a horror as just a really ****ed up movie. Disagree about removing The Thing though....essential viewing!
Also, Battle Royale is a fantastic movie but may not be what you're looking for.

Why would you get rid of The Desent?????

I am getting most of them for only €4/5, as cheap as I am going to find.

The Thing is one of the most impressionable horror movies I've ever seen. Can't be missed.

I would also keep the Descent on the list - its a basic enough premise and totally predictable but it truly is creepy, more so for the terrifyingly claustrophobic shots then the creatures!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,372 ✭✭✭The Bollox

I rented out The Thing, and am looking forward to watching it! I will give my review later

Has The Eye been mentioned yet? If you're checking out asian horror definitely pick that one up. Tale of Two Sisters is great too... although the plot can be a bit confusing and you have to come to your own conclusions about a lot of things at the end.

I'd say stay away from House of 1000 Corpses if you're looking to check out his work.
why did you advise me stay away from House Of 1000 Corpses, but said Devil's Rejects was a great film when House Of 1000 Corpses is the prequel, as far as I can see anyway. Is it bad?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

It genuinely is a simple case of:

House of 1000 Corspes - Poor and totally forgettable, save the possibility it may stick it your mind somewhat for the very reason that it's so crap. It had alot of promise though, I had been anticipating that one for ages prior to release, which made it even worse.

The Devils Rejects - good movie, didn't expect much going on the back of 1000 Corpses but was pleasantly surprised.

ah good, I was considiring renting out House Of 1000 corpses today instead of The Thing

    The Thing review:

    very very good film.

For the first 20 mins I was quite doubtfull if the film would ammount to much, I just saw it as another Predator. However once the ball gets rolling you can't tear your eyes away from the screen.

Kurt Russell does a very good performance, one of the best I have seen.

the ending I'm not so sure about, in one way it's brilliant, in another it sucks. I feel a little too much is left to to imagination, but that's just me.

This film just got the green light for my collection, and on the back of this film I can't wait to see The Fog

Eh, you're in for a huge dissapointment there. The Thing is easily John Carpenter's best film, whereas The Fog is mediocre at best.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,036 ✭✭✭garred

Agree the Fog was good in its day but is one of those films that does'nt age well. I'd definitlely add The Omen to that list, without a doubt the scariest film of all time: the concept, the score, the acting, brilliantly done. However if you thought TCM was a great film we may have differing opinions on the Omen as I thought TCM was utter crap, a huge disappointment.
