i take the position that lessining the rich/poor gap is not part of the governments obligation, which ends at defending the constution.
Well i'd agree with that to a point, increasing the upper tax band indefintly is not a solution to keeping them close, and at the end of the day is a society where there is no rich/poor gap even possible?(assuming capitalist/mixed economy model is kept...other ones have mostly proven to be idealistic stuff that just doesn't work)

i could never believe im better then anyone else because of the college i go to or course im doing. people who go to trinity are no better then those who go to other colleges, or those that don't go to college at all.

perphaps people with insecurity issues need "a form of status/ badge" etc to make themselves feel more important then everyone else.

importance, or perception of self-importance is merely a figment of the imagination, becuse in the end even the richest/ most influential people will still end wipping their backsides and going to the toilet, just like everyone else....

power is a nothing more then a delusion of the mind and a creation of the hierarchal western society we live in today.
indeed having an esteemed title/ an esteemed career might make you more disatisfied as you realize how many other aspects of your life you can't control, eg getting old, failing health, unrequited love....
i think money or precieved power fade into the horizon if your surrounded by people who love and care about you, rather then people who seek to use you for their own gains.
luckily i am one of those people who is surrounded by good friends and family and i realize if i had a choice they would always come first in my life because i believe there is always going to be some things that will outlive monetary/or material pocessions.

you make some great points and i wish more people believed in our beautifull idealism. it is so much better to put value in ideas then in matrealism, but it would seem that is very counter cultural in our day. look as socialists in polotics. they only care about increasing the financial state of the lower classes. they reduce polotics to a welfare advocacy group when they are in government. they neglect ideas and judge success by ones matreal condition.

yes i am by my own admittition an idealist and have probably gotten into more then a pickle in more then a few threads becuse im not afraid to voice my views eg animal welfare/ disabled persons welfare....but at least in my profession i can strive for some form of idealism and help promote the welfare of others which is why i love what i do and probably wouldn't fit into a typical shark eat shark buisness context.

unfortunetly goverments don't get to be in goverment unless someone put them there in the first place, so someone must be voting for them.

I was working absolutely crazy hours for a few weeks after the exams, that's finished up now so i'm gonna explore the vegetating option for a while and recharge. So that's why i'm tired....

There is something going on with other ppl, there's been bickering and tension back and forth with ppl i know in real life. hmmm, maybe it's just the usual high drama that my friends exist in, and i just don't have the energy to cope with it.

But, if one more person goes off on one at me i'm going to embrace my Leo side and bite their head off.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,381 ✭✭✭snorlax

you better check that with her first! and you have to get adopted by the UCDer's, so you have to get banned here first..thats the way it goes im afraid

been there, done that, bought the t-shirt.

What did i do? Freedom of speech! :D

Thanks for adopting me Snorlax..... I needed some care and warmth as an orphan of the UCD4 forum. Sadly Kev whereas I'm a free agent Blondie83 isn't so if you want her to defect to ''the other side'' you wil have to REALLY wind her up on the UCD section which is absolutely imposssible as she never ever says anything offensive or does anything wrong and is a bit of a ''Peter Perfect'' type...... but if can provoke her into a ban I'll ya massive kudos! :)

I've got my faults, just like anyone else

    My rant:

Sometimes I just wish I had more damn cash. I mean I'm browsing CDWow and I'm nearly crying at the prices, but I just can't afford it. I absolutely love college but sometimes I wish I had worked full-time for a year just to build up a little store of discretionary funds.

A few years ago I was in Virgin in Liffey Valley and they had a very good offer of DVD's, I can't remmeber what specifically. I didn't get them, because I wasn't sure if I wanted to being collecting DVD's like I do CD's and otherwise it might be a bit of an impulse buy, which I consider terrible things altogether! I went home and thought about it and considered the benefits and costs of collecting DVD's and buying the odd one. I made a conscious decision against it, that it was rash and wasteful, and that I could consume better.

Right now looking at both The OC and Scrubs complete first series DVD's for €30, it irks me sometimes. Ah sure throw in the Roswell High DVD's for old time's sake, and maybe some nicer-smelling aftershave.

I know my wants are petty and self-absorbed, but they still exist, and blast Consumerism for them!

As this is the official rant/bitch/moan thread I thought I'd get this off my chest:

What do people think of these DUHAC guys cantering around College Park? Why do they insist on running at the height of the day's sunshine when everyone is eating their lunch. I often think that if people weren't there to look at them running around bare-chested, then they wouldn't be there in the first place.

Possible solution: don't have lunch on College Park (prohibited to sit-out anyways) thereby discouraging them and maybe impose fines on these grey-haired institutionalised old men who run around with no tops on.

And another thing: When was the last time DUHAC actually won anything? It seems to me they all run very slow and are not that competitive. Maybe they should train during winter months too, but then again nobody is there to see them in the winter time...
