    on travel:

it's a shame the J1 has become sodden with red tape - i spent a summer working in wisconscin and loved it. there were no other irish there, so we met lots of americans and just had the best time.

i think travel is like the song 'i've been to many places, but i've never been to me'. i've met people who can list off the places they've been to, a list that rivals 6 months worth of national geographic, but they themselves have little knowledge of what's going on inside their own, boring heads.

    on ranting and bitching:

so cold. so very cold. in my kitchen the olive oil is beginning to solidify, and the honey had to be cut out of the jar with a knife.

Where do you guys get your money for travel? I'd spend every day of my summer break travelling around the place, only I couldn't afford it. I could ask my dad for money, and I'm sure he wouldn't have a problem, but then I'd feel disgustingly beggarish so I don't. This summer, there will only be some mild travelling around Ireland and possibly UK/Germany, I dunno if I'm gonna do the whole interrailing thing this year..

It's not a whole lot... In first year I worked part time and had about 500 saved. Managed to get that up to 2000 after working full-time from beginning of june to the end of august. Then went inter-railing for 5 weeks. Still had the guts of 500euro when I got back too.

My belgium/holland trips have been very cheap too.. < 40euro return flights. 12euro night hostels. 8% beer that costs just over 2 euro in pubs (and we still drank the 59c offo 8% cans often). Food's quite cheap in belgium. You can buy a large bread roll for like 30c and a big lump of brie for 80c and you got yourself brunch ;)

No, I haven't. I will try it, don't worry. I do actually like travelling.

Bah, Cold is being able to see your breath when you wake up despite self heating the room overnight, when the house is colder than the fridge and when you turn down the thermostat below 4 degrees and the heating doesn't come on. THAT, missy, is cold (and was a bad year).

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,579 ✭✭✭Pet

I went from a freezing cold house to a roasting hot 4th floor greenhouse bedroom. I have to leave the window open all the time here or it gets really warm.

I am wearing a pair of leggings, knee socks, trackie bottoms, two t-shirts, a woolly jumper, a cardigan and a hat.

But, i now have runny honey again! Thanks for that tip Joe.

Hahaha, I'm gonna walk down to Rathmines, push you over, and laugh as you roll around on the floor trying to get up!

Damn, so I'm not the only one who was keeping an eye on this.

Rant time: I stupidly decided to stay up until around 9 or 10 this morning. This involved several hot chocolates from the Hamilton building, a lot of Father Ted, and some wandering around town trying to find somewhere with hot food at around 7 this morning, only to admit defeat and wander into Spar to pick up some frankfurters and a pecan pie/cake/thing. So now I've been up only a few hours, and I have to leave for Ennis on Monday in the morning and I've to correct the 'clock. Bah.

Welcome to my world. The only thing for it is a hard reset - stay up until about 6pm tomorrow and sleep until 6am Monday. You'll be all reset and well rested for the week. It's a tough job but someone's gotta do it.

Just on the random note of travelling - i actually do not get how people can stay in the country. i really dont. its alien to me. i lived abroad from when i was 9 months old til when i was 7, and ever since those days my brother, sister and myself just cannot stay in the city where we grew up (mostly) for the rest of our lives.

Its a giant world. there are so many things - why just be stuck with the same mundanity that goes on from day to day in irish life, when you can go experience so many things? I travelled on my own last time i went away, which meant that my nights werent all rock and roll, out on the piss kinda deals, but instead meant that i went out at the weekends, and the other nights stayed in or went to something random with a few random nice people i met and maybe had a few drinks.

for those who havent tried it, its worth the effort....getting out of ireland on your own or with friends generally will change what you think about staying in this country for the rest of your life.

also, as for how i afforded it, i worked my ass off for a few months :)

Dave how long are you working in tallaght for? i start in 2 weeks, am completely petrified as don't know what to expect (and it's a bit more serious this time)

I start in tallaght for 6 weeks on the 27th. I am on gogarty ward (female surgical) for 3 weeks, and in the OT (thats operating theatre not occupational therapy) Dept for 3 weeks. But i am thinking of trying to swap with someone and go back to naas for the 6 weeks, cos Tallaght is scary and big. I dunno if they will let me though. If i am succesful in swapping, see you on boards. If not, see you around Tallaght Hospital.

You'll be fine though. They are just really mean to their nurses. Like doing sock inspections to make sure your wearing black, or frying people for lateness, or making you do nasty jobs instead of learning. But as i said, for some reason, i know you'll be grand. And I can assure you, i am not lying to allay your anxieties, cos nurses never do that.

    true, great post Neil.

the only way to learn what goes on in countries outside ireland is to go and see them yourself. i always loved adventure and travelling, staying in hostels is actually a great to meet people as they are generally very friendly. iv gone down the country a few times with friends staying in hostels and the people there we're really friendly. it's a great way to experience culture that's different to our own. even in parts of northern Spain they're are rural areas and villages pratically untouched by tourism, these often make the most interesting visits as there isn't loads of cheasy chippers/ irish pubs. Bilbao in northern Spain or Basque country has a whole different language and the locals are very cordial. we got free wine in a pub when we said we we're Irish.
My brothers travelling all over South America at the moment and my Dad's just gone back to Botswana near South Africa. travelling is in my blood and i hope to go to either fencing camp in Hungry with some friends this summer, or else New York and live on donuts and coffee for two weeks...
(some mountains in north Spain i visited) http://file005.bebo.com/large/2006/01/26/19/210460898a230268792b870863774l.jpg

ps look for green and white that's our colours Dave. also you only in first year so they probably see you as cheap labour so they don't have to do all the nasty jobs. probably get easier next year for you :) good luck anyhow

  • Registered Users Posts: 887 ✭✭✭wheresthebeef

yeah. once you get into specialist area's it grand. cos you don't know enough to do anything. thats where the niceness is. Theatre will be easy. I know ye're colours. Green and white is also catering in tallaght. Hehe.

Budapests a lovely city if you plan on heading there - my brother and sister thought it was very sameish to most places around it, but i really fell in love with the place...

yeah. i do agency Health Care Assistant (previously known as Nurses Aide). Its grand. All you really need is First Aid, CPR, Manual Handling and some basic caring knowledge. I'm sure you could do that if you wanted to.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,381 ✭✭✭snorlax

we do manual handling on college too, it's not one of my foree's either, my lecturer was too heavy too push up onto the step, left us both with red faces :(!....

Right so. Well, I'm full of Sweet & Sour Chicken and Toffee Pops (the latters* for afters). Slightly tempted to go and learn something, rather then just mess about with boards and/or Command and Conquer for the next while.

I have had my last "BEBO is closing OMGAH!!!1!1!!1!!eleven" email. I've decided to take a stand and create a chain letter of my own. Remember, you saw it here first:

    Dear BEBO users,

BEBO have been keeping a close eye on the usage of the mail function by using the return-path headers to check how often a particular email is forwarded around. We have also been monitoring the usage of the mail function, and have conducted some surveys.

Going by the number of "BEBO is closing" emails, we have decided that you're all a pack of ****ing retards, despite the fact that half of you seem to be attending university as undergraduates.

As such, we will be shutting down the site, and sending Vietnamese midget ninja hitmen around to your various universities and institutes of education, to perform a genocide on the masses of incredibly stupid people who seem to be impersonating intelligent adults.

We believe this is for the good of the human race. Please do not judge us, we honestly believe we are doing the right thing.

Forward this to everyone in your address book, like the mindless sheep you are. The Vietminjahitmen will be arriving shortly in any case. Enjoy these moments, they will be your last.

    Sincerely yours,

    BEBO Staff.

I'm sure you won't mind if I nick that and send it around myself, Pet?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,579 ✭✭✭Pet

Go ahead. It'll probably make its way to you soon enough anyway though.

Or not. Because, by some crazy ****ed up BEBO principle, only the ****test of **** forwards trickle down into everyone's email inbox. This is pure comedy gold, of course, so it will be relegated to the ****heap.

    Old man.

    And now, rant/moan time:

My ****ing wisdom teeth are driving me INSANE. Not only are they causing pain, swelling, difficulty while eating and making my head swell uo to twice normal size, they're also pushing my teeth out of place again, which means that yes, oh thank heavens yes, I need to get braces, again. But not JUST braces, that would be expensive and a pain in the ass, but not debilitating. What WILL be debilitating is the jaw surgery I need to have done as well.

Orthognathic surgery - about 2 months in hospital with my jaws wired shut, eating liquids only and on copious amounts of painkillers. Then, no contact sport of any kind for about a year afterwards as my bones fuse and all that ****e.

God it's been a lovely day..
