A very delayed post, in that im no longer, anger or pissed off or in shock, juts moaning

I had a party on friday night and some idiot, though i believ it may have been idiots poured skittle vodka all over the computer. It would have been fine if it had just screwed the keyboard, which as of this present moment isnt working, im in the GMB, and is unlikely to ever agin. But the computer is a laptop style computer so some of the liquid must have gotten into the main bit in the speakers, its a bit of a stranger design, and now there is this beeping, and i unistalled th keyboard incase a key was stuck but its still beeping. God the beeping.

anyway it has since spent time in the hotpress, been fiddled with, stared at, used for checking email and other things (read BEBO) quite successfully but an onscreen keyboard is soul destroying so i can't post and reply to anything except when in college. Alsoi i have come to realise that flashboxes are the best bit of BEBO and with no sound, due to not wanting to hear the beeping its no fun.

anyway aside from the usual broken glasses, a smahed phone charger, a superficial burn and a melted dustpan brush the house is ok, but ah computer etc.

i am much calmer now, i did kick a few people out after it happened but apperently, well according to BEBO they all understand and its ok.

I've been having a run of bad luck take last week-

Monday got out of week 45 mins late so late for my friends birthday
Thursday night burnt merangues and a spanish omeltte
Friday see computer tale add in burn on my arm, broken glasses and melted dustpan brush
Saturday had to explain what happened not bad luck in itself just not fun
Sunday got a flat tire on the way to work
Monday MP3 player dead, lost student id card but found a check from my birtyhday so things on the up and up me hopes!

uh studying for stupid job interviews instead of studying for my finals, sounds retarded in my head but i've more or less got to do it?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,579 ✭✭✭Pet

Yes, I know the feeling..I spent about 4 hours yesterday pretty much spamming different companies with my CV and a cover letter. But at least I've got some interviews lined up (even though I hate office-job interviews and all the stupid questions they ask).

Anyone know if it's possible to get banned from bebo? I'm gettin a bit (lot) sick of it. Thought the "holocaust" poll would do it. Dang.

Rant: Hair falling out, beard changing colour without consent. ARRR, etc

Upload a lot of pornography to your photos section, and more imporantly, make sure people keep hitting the "report this user for abuse" button (I'm sure, somehow, you'll find a few candidates), since they've got millions of profiles to monitor and aren't likely to find it unless it's flagged.

    Nah, that's cheating!

    Nah, that's cheating!

    And Holocaust polls aren't?

Hils - again, much commiseration about the computer and the phone charger, as per usual I'm going to recommend violent vengeance. But to try and improve the rant slightly: 1) the burn is a necessary war wound and the food was totally worth it (you're sacrificing on our behalf, remember?) 2) you only actually kicked two people out, neither of whom had to be forcibly removed, which is pretty good for your average house party and 3) it was a class party up until the vodka thing. Which, I know, don't really help with the BEEPING, but I'm trying my very best to spin this into a positive light.

Wait a minute...when did the dustpan brush melt? :-/

I think ed means that doing things that would be out of character and who's sole purpose is to get one banned is cheating.

If you knew ed, it wouldn't seem out the ordinary at all to see a holocaust poll on his bebo account. That's just ed.

The dustpan brush melted when Daire decided to wash the floor with it. Boiling water, artifical fibre brush
and it was a good party, that post was just because i finally had use of a keyboard.

I absolutely agree with Hilary. Sociology is, basically, using big words to state the blindingly obvious, or, as a sociologist would say, the art of utilising convoluted expressions to reiterate manifestly observable facts.

Saying sociology is useless is like saying that science is useless.

There seems to be a general attitude towards sociology that it's some kind of airy-fairy subject sustained only by dry academic discourse that could disappear tomorrow and we'd be no better or worse off.

In reality, sociology is necessary. It questions everything about modern societyand makes you ask why things are the way that they are. Yes some of it can be quite theoretical but why is that such a bad thing? Besides much of it is grounded in empiricism - there has been a swing towards the positivism of sociology (ie that sociology can replicate that methods used in experiments in science and thus be methodologically sound) in recent years.

It can be difficult in first year because it's so broad - in one lecture you do the sociology of education in Ireland, another is gender, another is about consumer society. This year for me has been one of the best in sociology - it's been stuff about Irish identity, gender in popular culture, whether we're moving towards a 'risk society' where we lose all faith in traditional institutions and for the first time face risks that we've created ourselves (environmental, technological etc).

I'm writing this on a quick break from the library where my brain cells are melting somewhat so I might come back to this later but I cannot defend sociology enough.

I honestly believe that everyone should have to do sociology and social policy together in school. It's that important.

Now psychology though... that's another story...

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,909 ✭✭✭europerson

I don't see what sociology offers that the more solid subjects of economics, political science, psychology, philosophy, geography, history and anthropology have not to offer. Just where does sociology fit in? What does sociology do that these subjects don't?

I took a Junior Freshman course in sociology, which was split into two sections: an introduction to sociology and an introduction to consumer society. Particularly in the case of the latter, it was made up of psychology, economics and some geography. The first module was made up of nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century philosophy, along with a healthy dose of feminist economics.

In this context, I find that sociology isn't really an academic discipline in itself, but rather is a mish-mash of several other subjects all brought together to synthesise a study of "society". It's the social scientific equivalent of trying to deny the existence of botany, zoology, physics, etc., and forcing under one umbrella of "science", whilst denying the individual subjects' rights to an identity of their own.

Oooh I haven't had a anti-sociology rant in so long!

**Cuddles his anti-sociology rants closely, a coo-coo-choo, aren't you just lovely? Yes you are. Oh yes you are! You hang up first. No, you hang up!**

    ...Ahem.

    Anyway.

Sociology is annoying because it doesn't stick to (what I think) should be its locus focus. It goes into shite about Freudian theories that don't belong on its courses. Maybe the introductory course I had was particularly bad, which is quite possible, but it really doesn't give any suggestion that sociology in general is different.

And that bloody department are unbelievably bad. Atrocious standards appears to be their main aim. There was that one time (not at band camp) where I got deducted 5% for not submitting my essay with a cover-sheet. I strolled over to College Green to pick myself up a cover-sheet from the department and they didn't have any. Ten minutes before the essay was due. How pathetic! And then there was the fiasco with the return of those essays where I ended up really losing the head and yelling at the office administrator. "Listen to me. You have a bundle of 100 essays in your hand. One of them in mine. You can, of course, go through them and give it to me. There's nothing stopping you apart from your willful incompetence. I don't give a sh*t that it's 6pm. I have been queueing out that door since 4:50pm, ten minutes before you came. It's not my fault. It's your fault you hadn't the essays alphabetised prior to giving them out, it would have taken ten minutes. So your failure to spend ten minutes organisation a mountain of essays has kept me waiting well over an hour so listen to me, you will go through those essays right now and you will hand me my essay back to me which I submitted three weeks ago. It will take you less than one minute, whereas it takes me an hour to commute into college. Now give me my f*cking essay."

And then there was the correction of the "Is the Celtic Tiger replicable [to new accession countries of the EU]?" essay. One of my points was along the lines of "Given Ireland's strong historical and cultural association with America (as discussed above), one would not expect flows of FDI to be so forthcoming to countries formerly behind the Iron Curtain as they were to Ireland." In big red ink a comment asked "Where is there evidence of this?" For God's sake! Can nothing be self-explanatory to you people?!?! If I said the sky was blue would you require a bloody source? nNaArRgG!

    Little question for you,
Which one of these has a bigger impact on how we live our lives, and without which would give rise to the largest difference in how we would live our lives and interact with people :
    a) Science?
    OR
    b) Sociology?

    I rest my case.

Ok that's the THIRD time in as many months that I've knocked over my neighbour's wheely bin while reversing the car out infront of the house. Why don't they put it with the rest of the wheely bins? Why do they so often seem to chose that particular angle behind the car such that the bin is obscured from my vision by the roof support?

Stupid lack of hungover eating abilities too..
