Best Cover: Smashing Pumpkins - Dancing in the Moonlight.

Pumpkins were right up there with Johnny Cash for taking someone elses song and making it their own imho.
This is my favourite cover of all time. Brilliance....

I have a pretty sizable collection of cover versions. I dont know if I could pick an outright favourite because there are so many brilliant ones, but I've just listened to Umbra et Imago's cover of Rock Me Amadeus, which never fails to bring a smile to my face.

My personal favourites include two versions of "Tainted Love". The first, the one everyone knows and loves, is Soft Cell's. The other is a completely different take on the song by Coil

I prefer the original version of 'tainted love' - the northern soul version.

The Flying Lizards - Money ( excellent cover).

Nouvelle Vague- 'Just can't get enough'

I have to say the Scissor Sisters 'comfortably numb' is a good cover.

It is shameful to say but phil collins 'you can't hurry love' isn't bad at all.

Alexisonfire - Charlie Sheen Vs Henry Rollins
    Thrice - Eleanor Rigby
Probably one or two songs from Metallica's Garage Inc. album.
Seu Jorge - Life On Mars
    ...All great :)

I prefer the original version of 'tainted love' - the northern soul version.

Yeah but as covers go, Soft Cell definitely claimed that song as their own (not that Gloria Jones isn't any good)

There's loads that I love (too many to mention), but there's one doing the rounds at the moment that's fantastic. It's Mat Weddle of Obadiah Parker (whoever they are???) doing a cover of OutCast's "Hey Ya"

Came across an album with quite a few covers on it called Americelt Union by Ron Lindsay - loads of covers but his version of 60's Roy Orbison classic Only The Lonely is amazing - so different from the original and so good.

As a contemp fan I also love Alison Krauss version of I Will by the Beatles

Did a top ten cover versions of all time on my radio show once. It reads as follows:
    10. Nina Simone - Mr. Bojangles
    (originally by Jerry Jeff Walker)

    09. Scissor Sisters - Comfortably Numb
    (originally by Pink Floyd)

    08. The Beatles - Twist And Shout
    (originally by the Isley Brothers)

    07. The Byrds - Mr. Tambourine Man
    (originally by Bob Dylan)

    06. Soft Cell - Tainted Love
    (originally by Gloria Jones)

    05. Aretha Franklin - Respect
    (originally by Otis Redding)

    04. Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
    (originally by Leonard Cohen)

    03. Sid Vicious - My Way
(previously by Frank Sinatra, originally by Paul Anka)

    02. Pet Shop Boys - You Were Always On My Mind
(previously by Elvis Presly, originally by Brenda Lee)

    01. Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower
    (originally by Bob Dylan)

Not a bad list... I don't remember where we got it from though, or whether we just made it up ourselves...

i like covers that completely reconstruct the original song - why bother doing a straight cover if you're unlikely to match the original.

    Devo - "(I can't get no) Satisfaction"
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvcuaJy9OwI

    The Flying Lizards - "Money"
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtRkztckzkU

and anything on Nick Cave's amazing "Kicking against the Pricks" album.

The best has to be Hendrix - 'All along the Watchtower' and Bruce Springsteen - 'Chimes of Freedom', both originally by Bob Dylan.

    Other good ones are:

    Johnny Cash - 'Hurt'
Bob Dylan - 'The House of the Risin' Sun'

    Johnny Cash - Hurt
    AFI - Halloween
    Lemonheads - Ms Robinson
    Metallica - Am I Evil?
