Are new BBCodes ever added to boards.ie based on users requests? If so could I suggest adding:

and for doing superscript/subscript. These are very useful when trying to post a mathematical equation or chemical formula.

I'm guessing that asking for embedded LaTeX processing would be asking too much :)

Some form of highlight tag would also be nice - something that changed the text background to a dayglo yellow or green. This would allow highlighting parts of text without having to resort to bold or italic.

Longer term - have you considered allowing the embedding of youtube/google videos (Maybe done like images today - only certain forums with a user option to turn them off)?

I'd like to see LaTeX rendering too. It would be varying degrees of easy, depending on how good you want it to be. You could copy how wikipedia do it quite easily using imagemagick and ghostscript, or you could use a simple mimetex.cgi and change [latex]\Large\frac{foo^2}{bar_{17}}[/latex] into
    <img src="http://www.boards.ie/cgi-bin/mimetex.cgi?\Large\frac{foo^2}{bar_{17}}" />

and then this would be embedded. Or any other LaTeX math you wrote of course.

I think someone else asked for the and tags before too.

Is there no HTML way to do it??
Engaging a CGI script translator everytime someone accesses a page with sup or sub on it would murder us I believe...

Dayglo over my dead body, you have to consider the abusability of these things.... :)

we've put in Spoiler vB codes on request before so it is more then possible but the impact has to be slight.

Youtube/google vids might be an option actually... I'll have a chat with the other admins about it.

and can be mapped straight onto the html equivalents.

I know LaTeX is a bit of an ask - it would be quite a bit of work and only really used by those posting complex equations.

I understand about the highlighter pen stuff. I was really just looking for a way (if say I'm posting a chunk of text) to highlight a bit of it without resorting to bold. It's minor anyway.

    Thanks.

The colour of text itself can be changed easily using the button between the 'sizes' and smily dropdowns (or [color ] tags), it looks horrible if overused, and it's not quite the same as highlighting but is ok if used right.

yeah, color tags are the handiest for highlighting. Adding new tags would add an extra length of time for the parser I believe - although I'm saying this without any real knowledge of the backend stuff of vBulletin

It's your site and all but for the love of god avoid the [yt]OMG vid![/yt] tags, unless it's to be limited to cetain forums....my guild forum introduced them a while back and they lag out the thread like f*ck whilst loading (even on a 3mbit connection) and that's a forum of about 30 people.
Also a few users with browser problems being put down to it.

I have to ask what's so wrong with a link to a video when the freeze frame of the video with a Play icon on top doesn't exactly reveal too much about the contents anyhow...

I also hate the idea of a youtube tag. Many of our threads make it look like boards is slow when in fact some user has linked an image in their signature from a site that is slow or down and the browser hangs while trying to get it.

As for mathematics, does anyone know of a decent way to do MathML support? (I don't know much about it but it has been asked for before).

try the AnyMedia BBCode add on from vbulletin.org - plays just about anything, but only if you click on it... so no lag while the page loads. i use it and it's graaaaand so it is.

er... I wasnt even thinking about embedding video, I was thinking about some quick code embedding for linkage (God knows why because that would be more awkward then just putting the link in). A thread of videos all going would be a nightmare.... lol...

Oh. What's the difference between that and a normal link then?

It'll be a web2.0 link! Twice the fun all bundled into one click..

Funnily enough I wrote some code to do just that a few days ago. It also does a hell of a lot of other stuff. I might post it tomorrow. I think many will be pleased.

Maybe when you move your pointer over it, it - what's the word I'm looking for - rolls? yeah, "rolls" over. Like some sort of rollover. Or something.

Like, the text changes colour; that'd be neato.

Mouse over spoilers using span and hover in CSS instead of having to drag over it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,762 ✭✭✭WizZard

How about just getting and for the time being. Are there any known problems with them?

Why don't you get in contact with Radium from SA. He's developing his own software to deal with the loads which takes over VB in increments.

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 10,501 Mod ✭✭✭✭ecksor

SA are still on VB 2 aren't they?

2.6 with customisation but they're building their own forum software now to be phased in.
