Best way for a beginner to learn Japanese

Okay I've recently begun trying to learn Japanese by myself. I'm not intending to use it in any sort of business setting but more as a hobby/challenge. I intend to enroll for lessons once I have a basic grasp of the language.

So I was wondering for any suggestions on the most effective way to learn, bearing in mind that I have no strict timeline. Is it wise to ignore Romanji and concentrate more on the Japanese scripts? Or does that only apply for natve speakers learning the language?

    Any comments welcomed.

    Thanks
