After spending the past few hours tearing the house apart looking for my car (and house key), I've come to the conclusion that I may have inadvertently left them in the front door. :o They are no longer there.

I have the slim spare key with the integral emergency entry key (pictured below) and it has two code numbers on it. I presume I'll need these to order the replacement. Does anyone know the cost of replacing a key for a MB W210 and does the price vary from dealer to dealer? Does it take long?

Apologies for the basic questions but in twenty year's driving, I've never had this problem before.

They will also have the key of the house.

I think you'll be paying around 200 euro judging from comments I've read on MB mesage boards.

Does the key have the alarm fob on it?

That's not so bad - a few people told me it would be around €800

    Thanks Mike.

If I was you, I'd be more worried about replacing the locks on your front door and locking the steering of your car or something than the cost of replacing the key.

Don't mean this to sound sarcastic and I really do feel for you!

Don't thank me yet! I was translating UK prices the time is about 10 days, they have to get the key cut in Germany.

and yes change your house door lock tomorrow.

I've acquired a lock for the house. :)

Yup - I always keep a heavy chain and padlock in the boot so I'll be utilising it for the immediate future.

PS - am I obliged to inform my insurance company?

I would contact your car insurance company, and your house insurance company, because one of them may cover the cost of replacing the locks and replacing the keys!

    Hi,

keys can be sourced much quicker than you might think. It is possible to un-code the missing key so it will be no good to whoever has it. If you need any further advise give me a shout.

I was just about to say this. I'd make that a priority!

Wishbone, you could try Steve-Guard, a company that specialise in Automotive security. They are not exactly the cheapest but they are quite competent and approved by most motor manufacturers. Give them a call on 01 836 6699

Just had to replace my MB key less than a week ago. First off my guy had to bring down the star tak thingy plug into car, find out which set of keys (1-1, 1-2, 2-1, 2-2) had been used, take VIN number, details including driver licence number (proof of ID), new key arrived less than 12 hours later, collected it, sat for 3 hours in the car while car and key made love, 45 mins for the engine, 2.5 hours for the transmission, still waiting on the metal bit though, that has to come from Germany.

    Total cost €180.00.

    PS: That's for a 220 might be cheaper for a 210.

I recently replaced a dud key for my w210. It cost €200 from a main dealer and leaving the car in to them for 2 days, one to get the code and the second to pair the new key to the car. You will need to prove your own ID and the car's. It took almost a month from start to finish.

Thanks for all the replies lads.

I contacted my local dealer today and he reckons about €180 (good guess Mike 65!). I have to provide all the relevant vehicle documents and my licence. He says it should take about 2 days. I'll order in on Monday in the vague hope that the keys might turn up over the next few days.
