I'm doing Engineering Undenominated. So, I've probably seen everyone else who does engineering at the thing today. Hello all *waves*.

Theoretical Physics. And as far as I know, the only ones you can afford to skip are lectures.

    Sociology (tough subject, shit department).

Really? It's me Major (with English) so I'd be interested in your views on it.

Feckin' freshers. Had to queue for ages for lunch because of them.

Kept getting asked was I a fresher. No, I've finished college. Alas, what a devastating blow to my ego.

On the bright side, you could have gone to the SU tent and gotten free pigs and condoms if people thought you were a fresher.

Ok, I just removed 29 posts from this thread because they were off-topic.

However, because the debate is a worthwhile one, I copied the posts over to another thread called "Going to Tutorials [Title Change]".

I've also slightly changed the title of this thread and stickied it.

From here on in, ignore the part of the OP that mentions tutorial attendance please. This thread is now for first years (or UCD boards newbies) to say hello, and for us to tell them that they're welcome and probably hot.

Hulla says you're new, and probably hot. Well done you. Being a fresher is almost the best time to be in college. You get to do all the stupid things and blame your newness. Welcome one and all.

What do you find so disagreeable about the poor commerce students? Are they obnoxious?.....unfriendly?.......smelly?

Poor?? unfortunate choice of word there.

It wud hav been foolish of me not to expect everyone to be obnoxious..put yeah i tink they are pretty unfriendly, self obsessed etc..guys and girls

but on on the other hand, smell i not an issue..in fact a quick stroll thru quinn is quite a treat for one's nose.

Get over it. It's not that bad. Just because some of them have money doesn't mean they're bad people. They might have an attitude, or view of life that's unfamiliar to you, but they are, for the most part, good people.

My best advice to you would be to give them a chance. It's only going to make your own life easier. I mean, do you think they care?

I take offence at that ! Ok, not really, but I disagree. I'm a commerce student and I'm not obnoxious or self obsessed. Admittedly this may be due to the fact that I'm basicially a nerd, but still. I've met lots of people who are friendly and approacable while doing the course, not to say some of them aren't pricks though (but you'll find that anywhere).

Have you had any group assignments yet? They tend to be quite good at breaking down the "we already know each other" barriers, as the groups are normally random.

You don't have to have anything to do with them. I get on well with my class, but I tend not to socialise with them, as going to nightclubs etc is not my idea of a good time (mind you, if they did something else, I'd go). I joined a few societies last year and found one or two which I stayed involved with all year, and I remain involved with one of them.

Oh, I'm in second year by the way.

Edit: Also, Hulla's right. I have many friends with more money than me, and with less. I don't find it changes who they are or how I treat them or they me either way.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,837 ✭✭✭abelard

I pretty much agree with the last 2 posts. I'm sure that, as usual, there'll be a few people who's heads are up their own arses, but if you give most people a chance you'll ind they're grand. Thankfully most people do tend to grow out of the secondary school closed group mentality when it comes to makin friends, so most people will be glad to meet someone new in their class. Have your tutorials started yet? They should be a good way to get talking to a few people in a smaller group and a more informal setting.

Also, how are you finding the actual academinc side of the course?

As a rule, if you hate your whole year, its not the other people in the year who are the problem.
