    milk doesn't contain 1 protein.

milk contains 2 proteins 80% casein and 20% whey, and if ye want to go further it contains four different types of casein, and dozens of other proteins tat make up the whey.

On what basis are you claiming that they are better quality?

Twice I recieved contaminated products from them, once a product that was contaminated with ammonia, and another time with chips of plastic. I've never had those problems with other brands.

They are overpriced, have poor QC, mix poorly, taste horrific and generally behind the times with all their stuff. Essentially, they have nothing going for them bar good marketing, if you call that a plus.

Maximuscle is the best product i have taken, it really works!

Disagree. Too expensive. If you're going to spend money get BSN

I'm just after ordering 22lbs waxy maize and 22lbs whey isolate from bulkpowders. Simplicity is best.

Have you tried the wms yet? i got some from myprotein, it tastes pretty nasty.

Has anyone tried the nuts? They seem a little pricey compared to tesco tbh, but that's probably because Tesco are pretty cheap and hard to beat I'd imagine!

Haven't tried the nuts, but have you looked in any local ethnic shops first? They often have bulk bags of nuts, you could compare the prices. The Indian shop near me have a lot.

Thanks a mill for that idea - hadn't thought of it but not sure I have any local ethnic shops near me! There is a new shop (Turkish i think!) called Crazy Nuts which does a pick n' mix type ting but they sell fancier less-healthy nuts (Honeyed almonds and the like - nyom i'm sure!)

In fairness tesco are pretty cheap at about €1 or a little less per 100g of Walnuts, Brazils & Almonds

They are actually close to price of tescos unsalted non-cooking nuts. The cheap ones in tesco are the ready salted peanuts (cheaper than pet shops:eek:). The cashews (roast & salted) are a good price but the ones comparable to the myprotein ones can be expensive. Baking sections have raw unsalted nuts but some say they are not as good quality, I find them OK. If buying in bulk myprotein is probably cheaper for the nuts, but if I have a kilo of nuts it goes as quick as a 100g bag! Dunno how they ship 26kg for £5!

Thanks for that! I thought baking nuts were ok??
The Brazils on myprotein are certainly great value, but the almonds and walnuts I found were a little pricier - but I'm comparing with the prices for cooking / baking nuts (as i thought they would be the same!) so may not be comparing like with like.

Hey everyone I really want to up my protein intake. I'd trying to keep up with the GOMAD as rippetoe says but even thats hard for me to get in with the little free time I have! So I was thinking of taking whey prtein twice a day and then casein prtein at night before I go to sleep. This a good plan to build some muscle?

    Thanks for the help

I've never posted on this forum before so I had better say that I am a complete novice on this subject. Basically I am quite thin and underweight and would like to gain weight in connection with a fitness regeime that is not heavily reliant on weight lifting.

I plan to do a lot of gym work, particularly focusing on cardio but not so much heavy weights as I have a bad back.

I am looking for recommendations on what sort of supplements would be suited to this type of training. Ideally I would get fitter and gain maybe 15 pounds. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

What is your diet like? Do you eat a lot?

I would recommend getting your back seen to.

I have a bad back too, sort of. I need to take care of it but can still lift weights. Like mloc said, get it looked at and think about what you can do to work around it if it is very very bad. For instance you may not be able to do squats or deads but should still be able to find a way of doing lunges, rows, pull ups, etc. Exercise selection will be key.

I also have a bad back, I can't do exercises where I'm in a bent over position unsupported. It's temporary, I hope, and I'm working on it. I can get around it though, instead of the deadlifts and bent over rows I cant do, I do lots of different chins, dumbell rows, seated rows etc.

I'm not suggesting your problem is similar to mine, but I would suggest you find a doctor familiar with exercise who can help you find out what you CAN do.

Baking nuts are fine IMO, I have just heard other posters say they are not as good quality, I find they can be a little more moist but it doesn't bother me much, I expect there are different grades. You can get broken cashews in some Asian stores. Tesco "value" cashews look horrendous, all malformed and it is not just the look of them, they do not taste as good, they have other cheap "own brand" ones which are good, and not too heavily salted.
but I'm comparing with the prices for cooking / baking nuts (as i thought they would be the same!) so may not be comparing like with like.
In my tesco they have raw nuts with the vegetables and the prices can be twice what they are in the baking section.

Im 16,5'8 and a little over 9 stone.

I do rowing and train 6 days a week.

    Monday:Circuits-(push ups,sit ups,jump ups,burpees,cruches,etc....)
    Tuesday:7mile run
    Wednesday:Endurance weights-(bench press,bench pull,squats,dead lift,high pull.30X3)
    Thursday:day off
    Friday:Rowing or Ergometer(5k piece)
    Saturday:Rowing
    Sunday:Rowing

A few of my team are already on protein since august, but ive held back and decided not to take it as i didn't know enough about it,but recently ive noticed im starting to fall behind a bit,i used to have the highest bench press but lost that this month.Ive also noticed, the weakest on the crew last year has drastically caught up.

    So my questions are,
Would protein be suited to my training?
    Would you recommend it?
What happens when i eventually stop taking it?

    Thank you.:)

What happens when i eventually stop taking it? it would be like reducing your food intake

protein supplements are just a convenient way of getting more protein/calories into your diet

    wats you current diet like?

I've had my back seen to many times, suffice to say it is weak and therefore heavy lifting is out of the question. My diet is ok except that i cannot eat bread. I dont eat a huge amount but generally its not too bad. Basically i need something to bulk me up in addition to eating more.

As a rower myself i think i can tell you what you need. With rowing training and the like, protein shakes shouldn't be your highest concern. getting food into you straight after training is definitely what you need to do. after a session horse the food into yourself, ideally a 2:1 ratio or carbs to protein, like pasta and chicken, spuds and a steak, burgers and chips, whatever.

If it's your bench press you're concerned about, try to forget it. I remember when i was rowing at your age it was all the lads cared about, who was the strongest in the gym, who got the lowest split on the ergo blah blah blah. Yeah it's nice to have the edge on people in the gym but you shouldn't obsess over it. Especially cos there's no strength session in your programme, at all!

But anyway, to answer your question re: protein shakes.. they're no harm. they might help, but they'll do nothing if your diet isn't right. i never took a protein shake in my life and made it onto the irish junior squad, by concentrating on technique, commitment to every training session, and most importantly recovery from every session. when you're rowing 7 days a week and you need to be fresh as a daisy every time, eating straight after training and getting plenty of sleep is very, very important.

Have you seen a specialist with experience in sport and weight training? In many cases, weight training can help improve "weak" body parts.

This is just me ranting, but when and why did ON decide to change the taste of the double rich chocolate 100% Whey?????

I always believe that "If it's not broke, then don't fix it" and I wish someone at ON had of told there flavor folks this.

It's not that it is now undrinkable, however the taste is IMHO more synthetic and does not taste anywhere as good as the older version :(

Yep, same here. Bought a 10lb bag last week as I was running out. Only opened it this morning for my morning shake and the taste was soooo different. Also not amused. Why can't companies realise when they have a good product and stop tinkering with it then

Cause once they have something they can sell they immediately try to find a way to make it cheaper to make.

So I've always been a big fan of the pre-workout Supplements, (starting with Olimp Massacara back when I first started training, and now using Muscletech NaNO Vapor) but I've been hearing good things about BsN Volumaize and was thinking of giving that a shot this month, for a change of pace...

What's the verdict? Good idea, or bad idea?

Bovine Colostrum, otherwise known as 'beastings'?

This isnt really training related and afaik its banned, so apologies in advance if this isnt the place for it.

    Thanks
