Just 7 weeks to go before the Dublin Marathon, and a lot of members on this board seem to be gearing up to race. I have seen some comments about heavy legs and tired bodies as the mileage starts to increase. I know the feeling as I too am running Dublin as my first marathon. I am one of the Marathon Virgin team.

I am also a Physical Therapist and a Massage Therapist and I would like to make an offer to all board members in the build up to the big race.

Over the next 7 weeks I am offering 3 sessions of Physical Therapy and Massage for the price of 2. Alternatively I am offering all members of this board a discounted rate of €30 for a 1 hour session. Each session will include an assessment, a treatment if indicated and a deep massage.

If you are interested, please send me a PM or an email at brian@peppard-clinic.com. (I am based in Dublin 7)

Could you post the Terms and Conditions please, Domer?

This could be deemed advertising, but I'll allow it due to the fact it's very specialised and people here could put it to great use. Another mod/smod/admin could deem it advertising and then I'd advise contacting an admin about purchasing advertising

Sorry Squirrel. I don't know I was breaking any rules. Apologies and thank for understanding.

Not really any T&C to worry about, except that if taking up the 3 for 2 offer, the first two session must be paid following each visit, then the 3rd will be free. I have not done a posting like this before, so will handle each query individually.

    Thanks,
    Domer

I saw the post earlier and don't have a problem with it.

Advertising in general is frowned upon on boards.ie but discretion is usually given where the information being posted is deemed to be of interest to the users here. I think a few people here will be interested in your offer, which appears to have been prompted by the recent marathon training threads, and you're a regular poster so there's no problem.

    Hi,

I get knee problems when running for a length of time, and as such, means I'll have to walk a fair amount of the marathon.
Is this something you could assess, and advise on?

    K.

That sounds like it could be IT band problems.

Domer might be able to confirm this but you really need to see a physio for something like this. If it's happening after a certain amount of miles there's a good chance it's your IT Band flaring up usually due to excessive pronation.

Are you in the right shoes? wearing poorly fitted shoes or neutral shoes won't help the problem either. Obvioulsy I'd love to tell you to come to Amphibian King and get a new pair of shoes and it will sort you out but really you should see a physio first. It's too close to the marathon to not sit up and take notice when you get a niggle or anything.

    Hi K,

Difficult to make a call without knowing more of the details as to where exactly the pain is, if anything else causes it, how long it lasts etc.

As Damian says it may be your IT band, it could also be list of other things; a misalignment of your patella, imbalance of the surrounding muscles causing the knee to track incorrectly, all resulting in acute inflammation, and therefore pain.

I will IM you for more details.

Thanks for the advice guys. Domer I've sent you a PM.

It's the sides of my knees that hurt when running. At the end of the 10mile recently, every time I put my foot down it was like someone was tapping the side of my knee with a hammer..

Hmmm ... sounds suspiciously like ITB syndrome. I've had a running battle with it and seem to be winning. See a physio though to be sure. Custom orthotics from a podiatrist and appropriate shoes are the key plus proper ITB stretches (google them). Don't run through this. I ran the Leeds half with it bothering me most of the way and had to take two months off ... even after the rest it was still there. I've been very careful and done all the above as well as careful warm-downs plus RICE-ing after exercise. I'm now up to 13 milers (it used to be 2 miles) before I get any twinge really. You also need to take things slowly in terms of pace. Next few weeks will tell me if running the Dublin Marathon is feasible.

I have some ITB too and it is causing patella tendonitis but seeing a physical therapist at the moment (i don't know the difference between that and a physio).

Out of all the injuries I've had the ITB seems the most straight forward. I'll find out in the next week or 2 whether I will be running the Dublin marathon.
