Both still on the road a mate bought them

    405 is 1990 1.9D and has about 450,000 miles

    Notice a diesel trend here?

I've just bought a TDI Passat so thats encouraging stuff.

My old car, a 1.9 cirtreon zx had 185k on it. Thats the best I can do.

1995 Mondeo TD... only a baby on 170k.

No trouble worth talking about so far.

A few years ago Top Gear did a feature on high mileage cars. The cars that were featured were a Merc 240D, Renault 20, Renault 21 and a Peugeot 309 diesel. The 309 had around 400k on it and had been owned from new by a guy who did some crazy commute to work. Work was driving a lorry  His 309 was still on its original engine, gearbox and clutch. He was asked how his car lasted so well and he said he didn't cane it but he didn't nurse it either :)He was hoping to get a million miles out of it but conceded that he might need to replace the clutch at some point :)

My own Laguna petrol is is only barely run in at 120k. However it's big enough mileage for a 03 car and almost nothing has been replaced (not even brake pads, hoping to get 150k out of 'em)

    Pub Fact Number 3589

"As of September 1998, the highest recorded mileage for a car was 1,615,000 miles for a 1966 Volvo P-1800. "

I know I am a bit out of my league here but I did have an 02 punto 1.2 petrol with 15k on it when I bought it and 85k when I sold I two and a half (mostly trouble free) years later which is quite high considering the bad rep they have

    Here's a 240D with 2.8 million miles up:http://www.mbusa.com/heritage/high-mileage.do

MB have a w124 Diesel with 1.2 million in their Museum in Stuttgart. It looks original, but seems to have a later E-Class grille.

Impressive. They certainly don't make Mercs like that any more!

My old Merc 190e had about 190,000 miles on the clock when I sold it.

I was in a W210 taxi in Greece with 850,000kms on clock! I was particularly interested as I have one myself. The driver said it was triple driven 24/7 and only ceased work for servicing/repairs.

(Although this thread relates to cars, a friend of mine has a Scania truck with 1,200,000 kms on it. I occasionally drive another vehicle which is 4 years old and it never goes more than 2kms from it's base , yet it still has 250,000 kms on it)

I wouldn't doubt that at all. Those Jap engines will go forever if they get the min of maintenance.

I got my last skoda up to 138k before i said goodbye to her.

03 Ford Focus with 140K miles on the clock

I got a taxi near the airport a couple of years ago and it had just over 900k on it.

When I got into the car , a Diesel Merc of some kind I noticed the driver was quite old and the taxi plate was something like number 3 or 4 !!

He told me he has been driving since 19 dickity 2 and he had one of the first taxi licences ever issued. I thought he was pulling my leg when he told me that the car had nearly a million miles on it, until he showed me the clock.

I wish camera phones were about then .....

Merc taxi / limo (apparently classed as a limo so dont have to display the plate on the roof or yellow plate on bumper) in Tralee has 385,000 on a 99 reg.

I was driving a 05 golf and had over 60000 on the clock when I handed it back. No play in the steering, no play or wear on the gearstick. It was still like a brand new car and it was only the 1.4 petrol

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,142 ✭✭✭TempestSabre

Had a '86 GOLFGTI with 130k on it and it was still a very tight car, also a '91 fiesta with 100k, but that wasn't so good. We've had a Sunny go to 300k and currently a Vento Diesel with 270k or something. But its a horrible car to drive. Mind you it was always a horrible car to drive. Most decent cars go to 70-80k without too much bother these days. We've a Primera GT with 70ish and its mint and as tight as a drum.

A taxi driver in Athlone told me a few years ago that he had a Proton saloon with 256000 miles on the clock. He bought it with low mileage as a spare car for his taxi company. When one of his cars broke down or when he needed extra drivers it would be brought out. He said it always started on the button and it was still on it's originall clutch. He never even replaced a buld in it. And it was a petrol car...

Again when away on holidays I was in a W123 Merc 300D which had done over 2million miles, still solid and comfortable !

I know of a guy with a C200 Petrol, 1996 with over 800,000 miles and the only thing changed were the filters, brake pads and tyres.

My cousin had a 1990 Micra with 185,000 miles on it. The engine was still going strong (except for excessive oil consumption) when he got rid of it.

And my own Micra (also 1990) has 106,000 miles and rising!

    I've a '94 Passat TD with 230,000
    and a '92 Scirocco 1.8 with 175,000

Both going well. However our 1984 T25 went through two 1.6 dsl engines this summer, and now has a Jetta engine in, fingers crossed that'll keep going for a while.

Sold a '90 Nissan Sunny in '99 with 160,000 miles for IR£300 to a man close-by who has driven a long commute every day. Haven't spoke to him since, but reckon its gotta have about 250,000 by now. Its a 1.4 petrol. Still had original clutch and battery when sold!

I'm driving a Citroen Xsara Coupé 1.4i 1999 with 128,000 miles on it. Only just changed the exhaust for the first time 3 weeks ago. Pretty solid car for a hatch! Before that it was a 1997 ZX Elysée, and I sold it with 110,000 miles on it. Babies figures really, I know, but as I can't really afford a newer car, it looks like I will be driving the Xsara into the ground for tens of thousands of miles yet!

    Seanie.

My miles aren't really high at 90,900 (today)

but when it's considerered that that's a 3 cyl 00 Corsa it makes it a bit more of an achievement

    Opel Astra 92k miles

I thought it was great, aiming for 150k miles and then I will send her, unless I get the 200k mile bug.

Still feels tight. Love the Astra - go drive.
