Anyone see Prime Time last night on this topic - had me fuming Brian Lenihan flustering and blustering through reasons why UN convention on Rights of Child have not been ratified - main reason is that the right of the family is paramount in our constitution at the moment and it will require a referendum for the rights of child to be considered at least as, if not more important than the family.
Huge implications of this - some of them very scary - parents rights to refuse treatment, interaction with social workers, permission to travel etc - courts not allowed to clearly make decisions that are in best interest of child - given that most of the dangers/problems visited on children are by their family this just seems to be a totally indefensible situation.

IT is and the mess that is children in care and in foster home or left with parent that are not suitible is the up shot of it all. :(

To my mind the main problem is what will happen when children have real and proscribed rights.
Each child will need a child advocate to work on the child's behave to find out and try ensure what is best for the child.
The work load that this will cause on the all ready creaking and out dated and underfunded system that is socail and family affairs in this country will be substantal.

Parents will have to be correctly assed and evaulated in all custody and visitations issues like the process in the usa and the uk.
The mother will not automatically be assumed to be the default best parent, which is how it should be imho.

The last 9 years this issue of children's rights, the failing of the systems of care and of justice in reguards to children all of which were well warned to this current government is a disgrace.

Sod the tax breaks for horses and changing the law for magic mushrooms what about the children that are the future of this country.

Absolutely agree, children are voiceless and not viewed as full citizens in this country. We have been rapped over the knuckles about this, but there is total political inaction. The Children Rights Alliance is a good place to find out more / take some action.
