New BB Connection - Help

    My phone line recently passed the BB line test so I ordered the 1MB package from Eircom. Now although my line went BB active today the modem went AWOL in the post office. Following a phone call today to Eircom and a call from An Post I should have it tomorrow or the next day. Anyway as I had an old Netopia 3346 modem lying around(does not mean I know anything about setting up BB) I thought I would have a go. However the setup disk that came with the modem is missing so I tried to do things manually. Eventually I seem to have gotten connected but I am not sure how I got here or if it's correctly set up. I have a few questions I hope someone could help me with.

    1. I have a Mobo with built in Ethernet so I connected the modem to this. In the Network Connections in WinXP should I see 2 connections, one for Ethernet and one for BB Connection or should I be connecting via the Ethernet connection only. As it is I have 2, BB Connection and Ethernet. I connect via the BB Connection, just like dial-up. Which is right.

    2. When I right click on BB Connection and check Details I see:
    Dev Nme: Wan Miniport(PPPoE)
    Dev Type: PPPoE
    Server Type: PPP
    Transport: TCP/IP
    Authentication: MD5 Chap
    Compression: none
    PPP Multilink Framing: Off
    Server IP Address: 159.134.155.27
    Client IP Address: 83.70.67.230

    Are these details correct. I am a bit concerned I am not connected to the right server as I did not see that Server Address mentioned on the Eircom website although a DNS check did reveal it is an Eircom Server. Can anyone shed any light on this.

    3.The details of the Ethernet Address are as follow's:

    Address Type: Automatic Private Address
    IP Address: 169.254.115.7
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0.
    Default Gateway: (this field has nothing in it, it is blank).

    Again does this appear correct.

    4. I connect just like a dial up connection(using Eircom/Broadband1 as username and password) and I can disconnect just like dial-up. I thought BB was always on and there was no need for connection.disconnecting. Now this could be because of the way I set it up. Can anyone clarify. It is deffo a BB connection, at least I know that from the speeds. I downloaded a file and got a dl rate of 55.5Kbps. While this is over 10 times faster than my dial-up is it about right for the 1MB package from Eircom(Home starter).

    You should only have 1 network connection in your situation. The BB connection is there aswell because you have a PPPoE set up on the PC. That will still work fine but means you have to click "connect" to log onto the net instead of it being always on.
    Does the other (ethernet) connection say "connected" aswell?
    If yes, go to Control Panel-->Internet Options-->Connections (Tab) and select "Never dial a connection". Click apply and OK.
    That will switch off the PPPoE connection.
    Then open your browser and see if you have internet access.

    If not, you'll need to access the modem to set it up.
    In your browser type http://192.168.1.254
    If it asks for a username/password to access, type admin for user and leave the password blank. Look through the settings for the place to enter the BB user/pass (eircom & broadband1) and click connect.

    Did you get the eircom 1mb 20hours / month or the 1mb always on?

    If you got the 20hours per month I would stick with the ppoe dialup, but make sure you disconnect when not in use or you may get a shock in your phone bill.

    If you got the 1mb always on. Something is not right, the netopia in default mode should act as a dhcp server and give your local ethernet connection a 192.168.1.x number not a 169.x.x.x

    You could reset the netopia by press the pin hole beside the power connector and see if it then sets up automattically or set a static ip on your ethernet of 192.168.1.121 then in your browsers address bar type http://192.168.1.254 ( assuming the netopia still has its default address ) this should let you see what is going on with the router.

    with a always on connection you can delete the ppoe connection and your setting should look something like this assuming defaults

    ethernet
    ip = 192.168.1.2
    mask = 255.255.255.0
    Gateway = 192.168.1.254

    dns
    213.94.194.190

    hope it helps

    Thanks a lot for the assistance guys. Mits its the 1MB always on product. At least I know now its the way I set the whole thing up that is the problem. It really was a hit and miss affair. I think its the Netopia setup thats wrong. I have no settings on my PC for the Netopia(ie: I cannot get at the Netopia settings) as the setup disk was missing. kaizersoze both connection icons say connected and report the speed as 100Mbps which I suspect is the speed of the Ethernet(10/100Mbps). I'll give all your sugestions a go and if things remain the same I think I will wait untill the supplied modem arrives although it's great to have Broadband after all these years of waiting. I keep thinking I should be typing faster now that I have it. I was a bit concerned that I was connected into the wrong server and may be getting charged for it.

    Update: Cheers guys it worked. Pressing the pin hole beside the power connector seemed to do the trick. It automatically went into http://192.168.1.254 and the username/passwd details were already filled in. It said wait, then said "Successful". Before that page would not load although I was connected. Mits there was just one difference from your settings, it reports 192.168.1.254 for DNS, all the others are the same. There is one odd thing. When I right click on the Ethernet Icon and go to Status/Details there are 2 fields that report the following:

    Lease Obtained: 21/09/2006 00:35:46
    Lease Expires: 21/09/2006 01:35:46

    I thought I'd signed up for 6 months not an hour, anybody?

    the routers address in 192.168.1.254 and it acts as a dns relay. If you set the http://192.168.1.254 address in your browser you will see the real dns address.

    I'm glad it worked out for you.

    Regards,

    The lease address is just a local address from the netopia router. You can change this by going into the expert setting on the netopia and edit the dhcp settings. But I wouldn't both as it make no difference to you how long you get a local address. While your machine is on it will automatically keep renewing the local address.
