Anyone else thinking 'bout giving up using Boards?

Ive been using and/or reading this forum for 3 years now and I think a few things have to be said:

    • It seems to get slower every week to the point that Im not sure those on dial-up could even use it anymore.
    • All the server issues havent been resolved still, despite money coming in from massive corporate companies. If a business is making money you put some of it back in. Makes sense no?
    • All the good things are slowly been removed: Lack of searching, the option to see who's online, the option to search your own posts.
    • Absolutely pointless forums remaining. Cant David Hasslehof fans just Google a few specialist sites? As was said elsewhere, deleting a few of these would speed things up.

If anyone asked me to reccomend a site for Irish opinions and reference Boards was always the first Id mention, at one stage it was as usefull as Google. Not anymore.

Im fully expecting this post to be dissected line by line by the Boards Mafia but so be it. If Boards Admin doesnt get the finger out soon I cant see this site existing in its current form for much longer.

    Very helpful Mordeth!

I dunno how dial-ups could use boards its true. Not sure where the massive corporate money is though. As for giving up boards thats like "giving up life! :)" ;)

Its been said many, many times that its not a matter of money.
    Absolutely pointless forums remaining.
    Pointless in your opinion.
As was said elsewhere, deleting a few of these would speed things up.
Would it? Do you have a sound analysis to prove this, or are your arse cheeks flapping "facts" again?
at one stage it was as usefull as Google. Not anymore.
    Elaboration please?

Rebuttals are a natural part of arguments. If you want to talk, and not have other opinions, dissenting points, etc, talk to a good yes-man. Or a wall.

    Explain.

Servers mean more speed. More servers mean money.

have you tried asking for your money back?

No point even arguing with them PullMyFinger! You'll just get muppets posting up "ooh bla bla stop being a whinger etc bla bla" I dunno why the admins can't just admit that a) yes they are making money from the site using subscriptions and advertising (none of this "oh all that money goes on upgrading our servers" bs, hah yeah right the state of the site at the moment)
and b) boards has become very slow lately

I find it very slow at work where we have a 3MB Line. It's unusable at home where I have dial-up.

Won't stop using it at work however as it allows me to keep up the pretence of work!! :D

I can't the threads at the minute (ok, the search is one area I will agree is worth complaining about), but I do recall one of the admins (possibly Regi) saying that the bottleneck wasn't to do with the speed of any of the servers.

Unfortunately, posters here can be a bit like bad IT managers - even though they have no idea what the problem is, the only solution - only and ever! - is to throw money at it.

Its not going to get better anytime soon so stop "thinking" about leaving - just ask for a permanent ban and go away.

same go for the rest of you that complain, but wont just f*ck off!

Of course we're the mafia. Anybody who doesn't agree with the boards is crap line is in the mafia. If you're a moderator and you don't agree then you're in the special Nazi Mafia.

And if you think that the issues boards is experiencing are caused by the fact that vB wasn't meant to handle this many users and the admins are trying their best to find hacks to improve it while holding down day jobs, well then you're in the Nazi Mafia Conspiracy Freemasons.

It's all true. The admins plan to have everything running slower and slower and with fewer and fewer features, because after putting so many years of their lives into it they get a nice glowing feeling when stuff doesn't work as well as one might want. It's a conspiracy I tells ya!

Eh, what do you mean "admit"?
Some of the admins are business people to some extent or other. All work in our capitalist society in one way or another. Frankly there's much more to be gained by saying "look, I made a **** load of money, hence I am probably good at making **** loads of money, hire and/or invest in me".
What the admins have admitted to, is that they don't make **** loads of money from the site. I think they'd all like it if they could.

Yeah, how sneaky of the admins to tell us they are cutting features because boards has been very slow lately, without admitting boards is very slow lately.

How the hell do you people come up with these conspiracy theories. (Hmm. Should I move this thread to conspiracy theories).

Where are you getting this stuff from?

Have we said all the money goes on upgrading our servers? There is money coming in from subscriptions, but not a massive amount. There is money coming in from advertising, but again, not a massive amount.

There's a very strange perception about boards and making money. In the past it simply didn't make much/any money. Now it does, but not much. However, do you think we'd be ashamed of making money? I certainly wouldn't.

However, this is largely irrelevant, we're in the process of buying some new kit, which we can afford. There's just more to it than that and we're not discussing the "more to it" bit.
and b) boards has become very slow lately

It has become very slow lately. There, I've admitted it!

    We're working on it.

I've noticed the slowness - but not to the point where I'd consider packing it in. I'm addicted - fags get more expensive every year but people don't stop buyin em.

I'm sure the admins are as interested in a faster boards.ie as we, the users, are but give them time they are essentially doing Charity work at the end of the day for all us socially deprived people. Thou shalt not bite the hand that feeds thy...

Admins have lives too. If they were whole and solely working on boards, it would be fast, it would have searches etc, but it's not like that in the real world.
Life has priorities. I doubt the admins have boards as no.1 on that list all the time.
Give things time. Time pays off in the long run. Good things come to those who wait.

That's because all moderators are assigned to the normal speed connection while users are routed through the boards.ie moonbase router complex. Didn't you get the memo?

  • Registered Users Posts: 22,231 ✭✭✭✭Sparky

Pretty much explains why in guest mode it's slow for me. Then once I log in, it seems to be faster. All this through 3G aswell.
