Would it make you feel any better if you knew it was me who's organising the debates for B&L this year? I have a few little plans up my sleeve.

    Ah g'wan....share

scribbles hastily in secret L&H notebook :p

And it was me that delivered them last year?

We organised one comedy debate which filled Th M to capacity and a serious debate on the opening of Croke Park which was attended by 50 people the day after Law/B&L day at 1pm....thats a better attendance than L&H or LawSoc get at their weekly debates

How do ya like them apples?

[ This lark about B&L and improving on their marvellous comedy debate reputation of last year - complete tosh! I may not be a fan of societies like L&H and LawSoc at times, but at least they deliver!]

I dont think its fair to put B+L in the same category as c+e. Last year they organised great debates. Throughout the year I was toying with speaking at a debate But I found l+h and lawsoc to be so elitest and a bit focused towards art students for some reason. The topics for the L+h are always the same year in year out...porno,abortion,northern Ireland...BIG yawn!B+l were actually innotive and differnet in their debates. Getting michael o muircheartaigh in for the Croke park debate was great. It drew in people from Ag, vet and the gaa folks who usually would probably just go to the comedy debates. THey made an effort to choose topics that would intrest lots of people and not just debates on D4 or the catholic church, which L+H and lawsoc do EVERY year.
Saying that I agree wth Blush that C+e is a joke. But if people enjoy those sort of nights out in Bondi and club 92 then its not for us too judge.

Raph, Sarchasm signed up during Fresher's week because of (if I'm not mistaken) The_Minister's gentle coaxing and the amount of boredom spending all your free time in the Fresher's tent can induce. I can assure you they aren't just condemning C&E for the fun of it.

I can confirm that I know who Sarchasm is and that I was the one who convinced them to sign up. (and got a reference from it. Woohooo)

    yes...

Oh + lets all be honest. BnL isn't trying to be a "debating society". They do the odd one, a few academic events (I think) but they are first and foremost a party society imo. They're the best big party-type society around. Yeah they do some events annually (eg mystery tour) but they make a decent effort to mix it up with some new ideas (like that fresh ball + the "back to the bog" one that's on this week). Personally I think that for the most part they are very good at what they do + though many think it's a bid D4 soc, the auditor plays GAA + is from wexford as is last years auditor.

You are wrong. Several societies charged €3 such as filmsoc and photosoc.
Wasn't NetSoc €3 last year too?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,677 ✭✭✭Waltons

It was €4, I think. Not sure what it was this year though, as I never saw anyone at their stand :(

Fair enough, I rescind my point. Apologies Sarchasm, just thought it looked a bit iffy.

They're oranges, you need to look harder. It might help you to see what I was actually saying too. If your society is going to promote itself as something, then it should at least have carried through. The two debates given as an example here (one for each hand, well done!) hardly stand up to claims that were made - to me - about your society's fabulous reputation as a comedy debating society.

Hulla, I'll wait in anticipation. Looks like a little will go a long way.

While they annoy me (quite a lot at times) I do think B+L and C+E play an important role in UCD. As one of the losing candidates for the SU ents election for this year pointed out to me on Friday they quite regularly are doing the job that you'd imagine the ents office should actually be doing. Clearly their events arent to everyones taste but then neither are what we do in my society (World Aid) or in Blush's ELS and all the rest. The amount of people who go to their events prove that a lot of people are interested in more than just the free stuff.

I'll never see them as any more than party socs though. B+L may try to be seen as a debating soc, but these will always be secondary to the club nights. It's the opposite of Lawsoc and the L&H who are having way more club nights this year - the club nights will always be secondary to their debates.

ELS isn't mine anymore, Beany. :(

I just find that it's ironic people consider LawSoc and L&H elitist or exclusionary, and don't see the exact same thing in C&E/B&L. :) IMHO, and from experience, it's a lot easier to get involved with the former rather than the latter coupling. Not that any of them aren't intimidating. I loves double negatives, mmhm mmhm.

Hulla - I'm surprised you didn't tackle the B&L mag with a big red biro before it was circulated. :)

Anyway... any word on the C&E situation?

I remember in the Fresher's tent that we were laughing over all the misspellings. As Mod of spell czechs, Hullabaloo should be ashamed:D

    You should be so lucky:p

Out of interest what sort of punishment would a soc get [or if they get even] for this kind of carry on if true?

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,016 ✭✭✭Blush_01

I assume there'd be financial penalties and they'd be put on probation, meaning their grant would be pretty much non-existent and they'd be watched quite closely. Whoever authorised the cooking of the membership books would probably have to answer to council - in almost every situation, on the auditor's head be it, or so I would imagine. I don't actually know though.

Stephen, laughing is a bit much.

Whichever society gets George Galloway as a guest speaker/debater, will be the coolest society in ze world ;)

L&H have him, I dont think it's until next semester though. Elmyra can clarify I suppose! It's for the second time in 3 years too. It was quite an entertaining debate last time.

    Keep me posted Elmo :)

I'd almost come back if Galloway's coming again. I gave him a standing ovation at the Bush/Kerry debate two years ago, sent him an email afterwards and despite having an unbelievable workload he still replied to me a few weeks later. Absolute legend.

    Elmo, make my day?

Hmmm...well since it's plastered all over our magazine anyway. Yes dears, he's coming.

I'll try to find out the date so you can organise flights SS. :p

Out of a few thousand members you got 50 for an event. That would be a small dutchsoc event!!
