Indeed. On the BBC Newsnight comments page there are something like 750 comments, some frankly inarticulate. I plan to get the book and display it on my desk at work.

A lot of believers are picking up on his last sentence, "we weren't put here to be comfortable", as if it was some acknowledgment that his existence was part of some "plan" and invalidates everything he's saying. Well, he's allowed to make the occasional verbal faux-pas, and if you ask me "who put me here", I say "my parents did, and I know exactly how they did it, too"!

Started reading the book last night, very good so far. Its definately something everyone should read before they pass judgement.

Maybe they should reflect on PJ O'Rourke's comment that 'If God wanted us to spend time in Church he'd have given us bigger asses to sit on and smaller brains to think with.'

'If God wanted us to spend time in Church..." Here's some more bumper-sticker wisdom:

BTW, the Irish Skeptics have invited Dawkins to speak at next year's European Skeptics' Conference here in Dublin. Will keep people posted as to progress, if any.

The lads in Trinity Church Network (one of the larger evengelical outfits in Ireland), have blown the dust off some old red-blooded anti-Dawkins stuff they had lying around and posted it:

It is the usual attack rather than respond that one finds all the time with religious types who are under increasing pressure to try and figure out a way to adapt their religious beliefs into the scientific nature of modern society.

Before hand of course they didn't have to, they were in control. Now science is in control. So you get the rather baffling sight of religious types attempting to show that in fact their religious does work inside a scientific frame work. And when they can't do that they simply attack those who point this out. Look at the Creationist thread

I was already in a bad mood this morning and that article has make things worse.

    Take this quote:
As Michael Poole points out, 'If the universe doesn't need a designer, why should [Dawkins] claim that God needs one?'
    It's infuriatingly contradictory.

Dawkins says the universe doesn't need a designer. Theists say it does. So Dawkins says if you believe the universe requires a designer, then why does god not need one? Dawkins doesn't believe in god - he is pointing out a contradition to those who would require a designer. Grrr.

However I can see how Dawkins' "religion is a virus" attitude prompts responses like this.

I bought "The God Delusion" yesterday but I'm too frazzled to start it yet.

    How much is it actually?
May pop over today and buy it if my student pockets can afford it.
See if it says anything interesting.

I only know it's €16.99 from Hodges Figgis on Dawson Street.
See if it says anything interesting.
It might enlighten you as to the only logical viewpoint. ;)

Religion is 'profligate wastefulness', and an 'extravagant display of baroque uselessness.'[6] It is 'plain insanity or surrealist nonsense.'
    Dawkins.

How can he say this? Just look at the plain walls of Vatican City. The church is not into money, treasures or riches of any type. :D
