Can anyone recommend someone who could carry out the necessary alterations to our fireplace and then install a new hearth and a small (5kW) woodburning stove?

My fiance has her heart set on a Charnwood Country 4 Stove, but unfortunately the suppliers of the stove want to charge us the earth to do the work. We've tried a couple of other suppliers who seem to be more reasonable, but they will only do the work if we buy one of their stoves.

The work that needs to be done is:

    1. Widen existing fireplace opening (kango)
    2. Fit some heat resistant panels in the recess.
    3. Plaster the wall where the fireplace used to be.
    4. Fit new hearth
    4. Fit woodburner

Any help or suggestions greatfully appreciated.

just looking at the stove, bit concerned by the following

    Vertical rear flue connector

Given the work u have listed, will this work or how is the flue going to work?

    will it be visible?

what are u going to burn in this, just the kiln dried firewood?

    Hi,

Even if you have a source of good quality dry logs I recommend that you opt for the multi fuel riddling grate, the extra distance from the ash pan will ensure a longer life for the grate.

There is a lot of work involved in what you have described, perhaps the supplier of the Charnwood stove is quoting for the amount of work needed to ensure you get the best heat from their product.

Take care when widening the ope of the fireplace, many of the newer homes have lintels designed for a traditional fireplace, these do not have a lot of bearing on each side.

    Thanks for the comments.

Was only planning to burn dry wood. Was under the impression that wood burned best on a bed of ash and not on a grate. Hence there is no ash pan or grate with this model.

Have already taken out fireplace and there is plenty of room on either side of the lintel for widening (house about 15 yrs old).

rooferPete - Just noticed on your website that you do Hunter stoves. How would the Hunter Hawk 4 compare to the Charnwood? Do you cover North Wicklow?
