The last time I was home there seemed to be a Forbidden Planet/Sub City type Comic Store about to open on the Quay.Does anyone know if its open yet and have they checked it out? If yes what's your impression?

Yeah its open. I was on my way in but then realised that the guy working there was watching the door waiting for a customer, I dont like those kind of situations where the cashier is watching you constantly hoping your going to buy something so I wouldnt go in.
From what I could see though there were only a few comics and some sketches for sale, couldnt see figurines, t-shirts, dvd's etc. Maybe they got in mor stuff since then though.

No not the place up near the Granary. That's the indoor market. This was down around ar past the GPO/Opticians opposite the crane,I think.

A shop like this would be a good addition but its not in a good place. There was a forbidden planet opened in Limerick years ago but it didn't last. There is a sub city in Galway. These kind of shops are more a Labour of Love but I hope it works out for whoever owns it.

The Hobby Shop has been near the GPO, beside the Internet on the Quay for a years. It sold all sorts of hobby stuff, including the likes of magic cards and roleplaying books. In the last year or more, I think, they opened another shop further up the Quay that specialised on comics, or so I thought.

btw., Waterford used to be the best city in Ireland for card games/roleplaying in the mid 90's. There were two quality shops in Waterford: the Hobby Shop and the games shop that in Johnstown where the Model shop is now.

Yeah I remember that shop up in Johnstown. They had all the old star wars figures and 2000ad Stuff. The guy who owned it was Scottish.I think the may have been scottish gaels.I heard his daughter speaking the lingo before maybe.I was talking to him before and he said business there was not good.Only at conventions in Dublin. It will be a litmus test for Waterford in a way.Tall tales was a classy little Bookshop but it couldn't survive up down in John's Street. There isn't enough retai diversity in Waterford and that is a problem. The Quay and John St and a lot of other places are populated by opticians and the like so people on most days don't have a reason to go down there.

Actually the family lived in Scotland for many years but were from Sweden. Knew the daughters. A strange family. All their stock was old; I think they consolidated the stock from a load of Scottish shops and filled the Waterford one with it. I think they were trying to get out of the business. Still I guess all their stock was bought, and the rent was probably pretty low, so they survived for a few years. We were spoiled with the selection of the old and the new really between the two shops.

I was upset to see Tall Tails close. I bought a few books in there. Their selection was really excellent. Not sure their location was great though. Book shops, like everything else, need critical mass though, and there was no other bookshop nearby. Little shops like that are easily missed, unfortunately. :(

I really hope so... It would be great if that was the case.

There was a massive place on teh Quay during teh summer, had internet access, the comic shop, differnt stuff and a bookshop, but now teh bookshop is the only thing remaining with a cafe, and teh comic book store has moved down teh street to beside teh printing place. The guy in there sells comics, magic cards, sketches and paintings.
