How can I tell if my hard drive is working?

My Acer 1670 laptop won't boot but I can't tell if the hard drive is kicking in or not. How can I tell?

Go into the BIOS - usually by pressing the del key or F10 (or even F12) just as you see the black screen. There should be an option to check the disk.

Also try booting via a CD. You can either use the Windows CD or get a Linux boot disk from a magazine.

Can you even get to the BIOS? If you're HD wasn't working you would defo hear some sort of beeps.

Also, the lights at the front should be able to diagnose a HD problem, check the Acer website for what they mean.
