I know. I know. This has to have been asked a thousand times, but the search shows nowt.

    Question:

Has anyone got a ticket in the post from a handheld speeding camera without have been pulled over at the scene of the speeding?

I am not talking about Gatso's - just cops sitting in the car sticking the gun out the window.

I am almost certain that the answer is no. The cameras that issue tickets are usually in the back of vans, whereas mobile Garda speed checks require that you be pulled on the spot.

The answer is Yes. They dont need to stop you.

Well, that was pretty conclusive! :D

Well I will let you know how I get on, as rather than saying they can, I was looking for concrete examples of people who have got a ticket from a handheld without being stopped at the scene.

    Ta.

I disagree. I was aware that a non-interception speeding offence had to have a picture of the vehicle reg so unless the Garda had specialised equipment ie, photo capabilities then he would have had to intercept you to
issue a fine/points. A simple hand held speed device can only provide a speed so how could they issue an offence based on that?

Au contraire! The gardai do have hand held equipment that can capture images of drivers speeding. From what Im told they are based primarily in the Louth and Laois areas but can and are moved.

This is the exact same question I was going to post also..(glad I searched first!).

anyway, I am asking this because once again (second time) I spotted a cop leaning out the window of his car with his hand held hair dryer and even though I hit the brakes (way too late probably) I am not sure if I should be expecting something in the post in the next few weeks/months.

The first time this happened to me was last summer, a cop standing in the ditch on the Killarney-Cork road and I was dead certain I was caught (doing about 115 in a 100 zone). He was pointing the thing straight at me..but nothing followed.

So it seems the jury is still out on this one but I am hoping and keeping my fingers crossed that they have to stop you!

At the end of the day if I get the points I will just take em and shut up, I was breaking the speed limit and fair is fair I suppose.

you are given quite a margin, so its quite reasonable that you can go at that speed and still not be prosecuted - its down to the discretion of the gardai at the end of the day though

also, if the ultra-lyte speed gun ( most common hand held device) is being used, you should be shown the recorded speed. Therefore one can assume again that you would have to be stopped - you could be prosecuted without this happening, but if you challenged it in court, i would imagine the case against you would be struck out on the basis that protocol was not followed

i think i may have been caught by a speed camera

does this mean i'm safe and i wont get anything?
