    That directive is 36 years old. Are you sure it hasn't been superseded? In any case, it says that no Member State may refuse to grant EEC type approval or national type approval of a vehicle on grounds relating to the permissible sound level or the exhaust system if its sound level and exhaust system satisfy the requirements set out in the Annex (these figures don't, however, seem to be present. It then goes on to detail the necessary test procedure.

    Are the exhausts you can buy that have the option of outting in the silencer that comes with them or leaving it out legal/illegal? If a guard with nothing better to do stops you over a loud exhaust and you put in the silencer plate is it then a legal exhaust?
    I understand the relevant legislation in Ireland is the Noise Pollution Act.
