    Hello

Can anyone recommend me a good exotic vet in Dublin? I've just moved down permanently and I'm thinking it's not a particularly good idea to rely on a trek to Belfast in the case of an emergency ;)

Any information appreciated, please and thank you.

Bairbre O'Malley in Bray specializes in exotics. Possibly not too far to travel, depending on exactly where your "Secret Lair" is :)

Well now, I couldn't be telling you that!

Seriously though, it's in Stepaside. I'll look into that, thanks :)

    I second B. O'Malley

I go to B. O'Malley too - I sometimes use Dr Bainbridge in Dundrum although he is semi retired now.

Sounds like O'Malley is the woman to put my faith in then! Thanks a million guys.

Just for the record, can anyone recommend somebody a bit closer, in case there was ever a situation where I couldn't get to Bray in time? I'm in Stepaside.

Anyone know of any Northside, touch wood none of my reptiles or turts have needed a vet so far, and I did check with the local vet who said they do treat them and if they have problems they have connections with one of the vets in the zoo, but just wondering where all you northsiders bring your herps? Or do y'all trek out to Bray?

Tabitharose, Dundrum would be much more convenient! Thank you :)
I will talk to both Bainbridge and O'Malley and see what my best option would be. Obviously Dundrum would be better for emergencies, but there are a couple of other bits I need done in the meantime that one or other might be better suited to.

    Thanks everyone!

Bainbridge is very good & is one of the zoo vets - but he is not often in the practise so as I come so far I go to Bairbre.

    Bainbridge is very good.
Manus Canon in Clondalkin deals in exotics too.
You could always call Reptile Haven 01 6704001 or Boardwalk Pets 01 6778160
Both owners have been keeping and breeding reptiles for a long time and wont steer you in the wrong direction.

Who said anything about reptiles? :p
It's chinchillas I keep, but due to their unique needs they require a specialised exotic vet with experience in treating their species, rather than just a standard "small animal" vet.

Thanks all the same though tallus :)

Bairbre or Bainbridge deal with all small exotics hun - was well impressed when I mentioned Sugar Gliders that Bainbridge said ohhh I worked with them when I was in Australia.

I know, I was just referring to tallus' mention of giving Reptile Haven and Boardwalk a call :)

Next time I wont bother heh
Did the thought actually occur to you that in such a small country that the same vets that deal in reptiles also deal in other *exotic* pets.
You're welcome to find a vet that deals exclusively in one species of exotic animals, you'll be extremly hard pressed to find one in this country.

No need for the snappiness tallus, I did thank you for your help and it was clear from my post that I was making a light-hearted attempt at humour.

Yes it did occur to me thank you very much, perhaps you should re-read the rest of my posts in the morning ;)

Have to say, Manus Canon in Clondalkin is very good at what he does, however his prices are (imho) off the scale.

By that do you mean expensive?

Note to the OP: If you need directions to Bairbre O'Malley's surgery, give me a shout ... the "map' on her website is next to useless unless you already know where it is :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,702 ✭✭✭bounty_hunter

Cheers Alun, that'd be great! I've never been there before so no idea. I'm still making up my mind on where to go but if I do choose Bairbre I'll be on to you :)

Bond-007, you mentioned you go to Bainbridge, has he dealt with your chins before?

I would recommend the Vets in Tallaght Village, Paul Doherty. My sister works there :)

Tallaght's really not convenient for me, thanks though :)

    Hi bounty_hunter

My wife works as a veterinaty assistant at Argyle and Bainbridge. I can get her to ask Dr. Bainbridge a few questions for you if you like.

    Regards
    Michael

    Michael,
That would be fantastic, I'd really appreciate it! Thank you so much.
I'm having awful trouble getting in contact with Bainbridge, he never seems to be about.
Are you sure it wouldn't be a problem?

Yep, have to say over the years I have found him to be rather expensive in comparison to others. And personally I have always come out of his surgery thinking he was a bit "cold" towards his customers and their animals, thats not to say he *is*, its just my families and friends experience.
I use him pretty much because hes closest and my mobility is limited.
(The only other vet nearby has so many horror stories associated with him that I wouldnt even mention him let alone recommend him.)
He IS a good vet, but ya could do with some price comparison before deciding to use him.

    Hi bounty_hunter

Sorry about the delay in getting back to you. It won't be a problem at all. My wife Liezl has loads of opportunities to speak with him and won't have any problem with firing a few questions his way.

Send me a PM with a list of the questions or post them in this thread. I'll respond with his answers.

    Mike

    Hi

We also used to go to Manus in Clondalkin village all the time as we live in the area. We've always had good service from him.

I'm just not sure if he has much experience with exotics. We've only ever taken hamsters and gerbils to him.

Dr. Bainbridge specialises in exotics and does a lot of work for the Dublin zoo.

Thankfully I don't know him from personal experience, but I was warned not to ever avail of his services by other friends that live locally :)

I've not heard good things about the guy.

    Cheers
