    Greystones Harbour Development

    Public Meeting

The Greystones Protection and Development Association are holding a public meeting in Greystones Rugby Club on Tuesday 3 October at 8 PM.

    Report.

“Wicklow County Council are currently preparing revised plans for the harbour” said GPDA Chairman Fiachra Etchingham. “The public will be asked to comment on these plans. The community united to resist the original proposals at the Oral Hearing earlier in the year. Now we must again send a strong signal to An Bord Pleanala and our Local TD’s that we will not accept the destruction of the harbour for commercial gain.” Mr Etchingham went on to congratulate the community on their success in the Oral Hearing in April. “ The strength of the community’s response clearly had a major impact on the Board” he said. “It is important that we maintain that momentum and I would appeal to all residents to attend this meeting.”
The meeting will also discuss some of the rezonings proposed for inclusion in the Draft Local Area Plan. “Just as the harbour plans fail to have any regard for the communities views, so too do certain aspects of the LAP appear to completely fail to reflect the community’s interests” concluded Etchingham.

    Greystones Residents oppose Marina development

Approximately 350 people attended a public meeting on the proposed marina and housing development at Greystones last night. The meeting, organised by the Greystones Protection and Development Association, was held in the local Rugby Club.

The audience heard from GPDA chairman, Fiachra Etchingham, who outlined details of the Bord Plenanala Oral Hearing held in April of this year. He emphasised the significance of the 6200 objections the Bord received and compared this to the 2000 objections lodged to the proposed incinerator at Ringsend. “When you consider the enormous population living in the vicinity of this proposed incinerator and take into account that-irrespective of its merits or otherwise- very few people will support an incinerator on their doorstep these figures are hugely significant” said Etchingham. “It shows the that the Greystones community is united in its opposition to this proposal” Etchingham congratulated the community on its efforts to date and vowed to continue the campaign of opposition.

Joe Carty of the Harbour Residents Association also spoke. He explained how in the draft Local Area Plan (LAP) for Greystones, Wicklow County Councillors had rejected a call from the Department of the Environment to designate the Harbour area a Architectural Conservation Area (ACA) and instead had opted for an alternative designation which had “no legal standing whatsoever” This was a cynical action on the part of the Councillors because, to have granted the ACA designation, might have jeopardised their marina plans. “In doing so they were acknowledging that the marina plan would severely damage the heritage of the harbour area” concluded Carty.

The meeting also hear from Evelyn Cawley who outlined how the undemocratic process which had brought about the harbour development had been carried on in the draft LAP. The LAP, she stated, contained a number of significant rezonings which had been included at the 11th hour by individual councillors. These proposals had no support from the community and were completely at odds with the advice of the professional planners.

Speakers from the floor included Liz McManus TD. She stated that she had written to the county manager calling on him to reengage with the community of Greystones to arrive at a compromise on the harbour. Green Party and Labour Councillors, Deirdre DeBurca and Tom Fortune also reiterated their parties’ total opposition to the current plans. Deburca stated that, in government, the Green party would do everything possible to prevent this development being foisted on the people of Greystones.
