What are the legalities of getting your rifle barrel treaded for a silencer/moderator.
Where and how do you get it proofed.(if needed).

Does a proof house stamp the barrel to show its passed proofing or give a certificate for same.

The man who threads your barrel, should he have a firearms dealership licence and a gunsmith qualification to carry out the operation. After all he is holding your firearm.

Can a firearms dealer get a rifle treaded in the local engineering works, and stand over the rifle that the job was done correctly and the rifle is safe to use without sending it to a proof house.

Most inportantly, if you have an accident with an unproofed rifle in the field or on the range are you covered by insurance.

Do country side alliance, NARGC and any other known insurance available to us in Ireland cover an unproofed firearm with insurance?

If you have no authorisation from your super intendent for your silencer/moderator are you covered by your insurance or is it a case of it will never happen to me.

The UK, or the EU states like Belguim or Germany

    Stamp on barrel

Depends on how you classify a "gunsmith qualification".There are no cumpolsory apprenticeships over here for being a gunsmith.Being a "gun dealer" also gives you gunsmith qualifications as well here. Two different kettles of fish.

Thats what mostly happens.Look, there is no big mystery to threading a gun barrel correctly.A qualified fitter/turner that knows what he is doing and has the correct measurements, and has some experiance in doing this job will do it in 20mins shop time.It is setting up the lathe that takes forever.Plus resetting your foresight correctly.THAT IMO is the biggest cause for suppressor threaded weapon inaccuacy

The most likely type of accident you will have is caused by YOU not screwing the can down properly on it's threads.Or checking it's alingement properly. The first shot will either blow the can off the thread of the gun or punch out the side of the can and go wild.It will NOT detonate like a grenade.
There is only ONE club that insists on this ASFIK in Ireland.

Er Yes.Considering how many Unproofed US firearms that were direct imported to Ireland are used quite safely every year here. The US has NO proof house requirements for it's gun makers.

More a legal question than an insurance question. If you dont have a liscense for a "silencer" you are in bother. If you have a suppressor or modearator, you are on somwhat fightable legal ground. As there is no defination of what a Silencer is in Irish law and the act only covers silencers not sound moderators or suppressors.

CG has about siad it all, rifles are being threaded by some strange means but even when its done on a lathe errors can be made especially as to how the barrel is set up in the lathe. i have seen some peaches:) one barrel ended up bow shaped where it was flung out of the lathe(a stainless reminghton) its a good idea to measure your barrel before and after to see if its still the same length:D. if the thread is not exactly concentric it will have on effect on the can, this is worse, if the can projects out 6 to 8" beyond muzzle, where as with the reflex only about 2"projects out the rest is back over barrel shroud like.if the thread is not exact at worse as CG siad it exit through the side of the can either in 1 hole or can fragment on the baffles and leave multiple holes. at least the acuracy may be brutal (lateral string) this is where the bullet is leaveing muzzle with different gas pressures on its sides(it closer to 1 side than the other)
