    Hi all,
I'm in the middle of making a simple site for my friend who has setup
    a hardware store. I've so far made : barna.salthillknocknacarragaa.ie
Have a look at it (please) and tell me what ye think, the pic which says:
Shopfront, will obviously have a photo of the shotfront in it and I know
the pics on the site are a little big, but i've already reduced them in
quality and dont want to make them any worse, sure they load fast on
broadband (who cares bout them dial-up people, lol).
The pic that has the aerial photo will link to a pop-up window that shows
how to get there accompanied by an aerial photograph, thanks to google.
    thanks in advance.

PS: on another note, wheres the cheapest place to get a .ie? I'm using
letshost.ie atm at there pretty cheap, anyone know of anyone's better?

Personally I dont like it, it looks like one big plank of wood that has had a 3 year old melt holes in it,

sorry galway francis, im going with the guru. the font is wrong and the wood/melted plastic idea just doesnt look appealing

I'm not sure about the design either. I can appreciate what you are trying to do, but I don't think it works.

Also - dial-up is still an only option for a huge percentage of users in Ireland. I wouldn't ignore them.

sure they load fast on broadband (who cares bout them dial-up people, lol)

The majority of people in this "technically advanced" country are still on dial-up, so you are going to lose visitors with that attitude. When designing a site, the visitor is the most important factor. Lose them and the site isn't worth a toss.

[hah! yeraulone just got in ahead of me!]

well, i was going for the plank of wood effect, just in the galway colours.
So ye'r saying it doesnt work, what would ye suggest then?

Why on earth is it all images?

    Agree with blacknight.

Classic designer move - style over substance.

Basically your site is completely useless from the perspective of text readers and search engine spiders. Might look fine but dont expect to be found in any search engine anytime soon.

You really should check out Jacob Nielsen's guides for web design.
Not everyone will agree with his views, but it's a good start.

The font you have is a classic example. It's nice(ish), but completely unsuitable for a web page.

Where would I find that guide?
Why is it unsuitable, I dont understand.
And on another note, do search engines not look at meta tags and not the text thats on the page?

Its (text) unsuitable because its hard to read, and most search engines tend to ignore meta tags.

    You could try Googling .....
Why is it unsuitable, I dont understand.

Have a look at any professional designer's portfolio or any successful company's site....
And on another note, do search engines not look at meta tags and not the text thats on the page?

They may take meta content into account but they generally emphasise the actual content not the inferred content which may not even be present
