Apoogies for the nerdiness but I think you will find that Meridian 59 predates Ultima and is actually credited with being the first MMORPG.

What Ultima similar to Baldur's Gate?

Yep I played it on its release. Was there for a while before they brought in the twin realms.
It was lorded over by the PK'ers who would travel in gangs and take pretty much everything you own.
    UO was a gank fest.

Funny I had a different view of it.

The main problem is that some people had one concept of how the game should be played versus how the game mechanics where.

Yes there were PK'ers but I never understood how someone could get so worked up dying to PK'er yet had no problem being ganked by monsters.

I call it "Hero Syndrome". Basically everyone thought they were the hero of the story in the game, when the fact is it was far from the truth. So when some PK'er ganked them like they were a gnat they get all worked up.

So you got muppets basically carrying more then they could afford to loose and then crying when they lost it.

One famous case in point I recall a GM grabbed a few people together and asked them to escort some other GM to a location on foot. They made it to a pass through mountains when they were set apon by PK'ers. About 5 of them. They easily outgunned the PKers and the PK'ers realising one of them was a GM roleplayed bandits. They basically asked them to pay up to go through the pass or they would slaughter them. Rather then pay or fight, they petitioned the GM to have them banned.

Likewise with some RP guilds. If truth be told they were in some cases as bad as some of the PK'ers. For example they found out (because a PK'er moaned about it) that if more then 20 reports on a particular person where logged within an hour then that person would be sent to Jail or banned. So if someone was killed, they would then message all thier friends to put a report in. Other crap as well like herding healers into thier houses so people couldn't respawn near thier towns.

The new world they created was out and out crap. It was basically a monty haul. I visited one time to check it out and started to attack a cyclops only to have someone come out of hiding and scream "MINE!" and threaten to call a GM because I had attacked a monster he was fighting (yet was hidden). In fact "MINE" was like a battlecry for noobs. Loads of loot with no risk.

Some of the funniest times in game was dealing with the thieves+Pkers.

i was in titan valley one day with a friend and we were chaining the titan spawns for phat lewt when a bard came along and basically told us to push off. he started peacemaking and provoking the titans against each other.

so i cast energy barrier between the two titans, when they broke combat they ganked the bard. funniest thing ever. we then chained energy barriers so he couldnt get back to his corpse before it was decayed. he had some nice stuff :D

    i got jailed for that.

UO to me was the highpoint of griefing ... a playstyle where the pleasure you get from a game is derived solely from hassling other players.

Later revisions of UO reduced this with trammel etc, but for a while ....

NPKing, invis blocking, monster training, bank scamming, house break ins, guard killing et etc .. blue corpse killing was my favourite. Couple this with a plethora of bugs ... Dr Twister anyone? and my entire guilds gameplay revolved around specific griefing techniques.

The good old days when houses had keys and if you died with a key and a rune named "house" on you ... you could expect a quick visit.

I've never had so much fun in an rpg, and never had an account banned. Who was the guy who ran the site full of screenshots of griefing, I'm sure his guild was called 'LEWT' but the name escapes me now.

You'd be amazed with the amount of money you could make making runes called "House" which went to the lizzy room. Basically a room with insane spawn of lizards that no one but GM mages could survive if buffed beforehand).

I forget the player who started that, but she was hilarious with some of her tricks.

Funniest one was with random guild invites she was getting so she told the guy inviting her that she would slaughter everyone in the guild. He laughed and invited her anyway. It took them three days and an insane amount of deaths before they could even get to thier guild stone long enough to boot her.

I played it years ago my first online game, it was the most scary white knuckle PVP in any game I have every played, if you got PKed you lost everything you had on you.

Those where the days of Sheepdog PKer and before the made a safe mirror version of the world.

I still have fond memories of house ownership in the game and hiding from PKers.

    one of the best
