Coming into college this morning i first noticed that my heater was not working for ages & then all of a sudden it came on slightly after about 30min. Shortly after that it kind of stopped again and i noticed that the temp gauge was all over the place mainly between the 100'c mark & the red zone towards the end of my 1:30hr commute. The coolant level is normal so I'm a bit worried about the trip home, any advice!

If you have a normal coolant level, cold heater yet hot gauge it sounds like you might have a dodgy water pump. What sort of car is it. Certain makes of car are known for failure of the water pump impellers.

IIRC the Astra is quite prone to cooling system and water pump problems. You should bring it to a good garage (not necessarily a main dealer) and get them to look at the cooling system. I thinlk there is a dye test to test the water pump they should also do a compression and pressure check.

Often if a car is overheating it can be cooled signifcantly if you turn the heater and fan on full blast and open all the windows. In your case it sounds like this wouldn't do much good as your heater is not putting out much heat. It does sound like the coolant is not circulating and is hot in the engine block but cold in the heater core (and possibly the radiator too) TBH I would be wary about driving it far without getting it looked at.
