    Hi lads,

a question on behalf of the bro, hopefully someone can help. He has a 1.4 Honda Civic (1997) and the battery went flat. He recharged the battery and ever since the car won't idle. The revs keep going between 1000 & 2000 RPM. Has anyone any ideas?

    Thanks,
    C

Is the check engine light on (is the bulb working: it should come on for a few seconds after the ignition is turned on)?

The light comes on when engine is first started then goes out.

Mmm. The only thing I can think of is that mysteriously the idle air control valve (IACV) developed a fault at the same time.

For the engine to rev it needs air. The only way air gets in is via the throttle plate in the throttle body (but your right foot controls this via the accelerator pedal) or the IACV (allows air to bypass the throttle plate) which is mounted on the throttle body. Maybe it's dirty and stuck? Or maybe the throttle body is dirty and the plate is stuck a bit too open.

Disconnect the plastic hose from the throttle body and check the condition of the TB (ie dirt/oil). Then check the IACV, mounted on the back of the TB, IIRC.
