Is it feasible to paint over gloss paint on wood/wood paneling with matt paint? Thanks.

should be, just sand the gloss a bit to give the paint something to stick to, otherwise it might peel to easily.

    No. No. No.

If it's oil on the surface then you really should use another oil-based coating. Sanding will provide a key but oil and water do not mix as the old saying goes (with some exceptions)

    IMO you have some choices...
    1) go ahead and sand/paint with matt emulsion, then watch as it peels off, chips or cracks in the next few months (especially in a high traffic area)
    2) Use a flat oil paint
    3) Use a high adherance paint like zinsser bullseye or a deglosser like Owatrol ESP and then apply your chosen finish.

Bottom line, if it's your home you want it done right and want it to last...no 1 won't, 2 or 3 will.

I was just being a cheapskate. Had the right coloured matt and thought I could save a few bob and avoid the white spirits ritual with the brushes after! I'll dig deep and get the gloss. Thanks for the heads up lads.

    Yes, works perfectly.

And btw, its a good way of coating the ceiling over the shower where the emulsion keeps peeling off.

2 coats white gloss to seal it, 2 coats of white emulsion and you can't even tell where it was.

Umm...until the condensation seeps through the breathable surface of the emulsion, meets the impermeable gloss and starts flaking the matt off.

The best way out of bathroom ceilings is to use exterior masonry paint thinned out a little....impervious to condensation and still has a low sheen finish...and it's water based so no messing about with oil finishes.

squibs; if you're tired of the gloss, satinwood or oil based eggshell is a nice alternative and is just as tough wearing as gloss. Also much better covering/hiding power, and is a dripless finish.

Look why not just go water based undercoat/gloss in future....:)
