Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Hi All,

Am new to this forum, but hopefully somebody will have some good advice.

Just after getting broadband in the house. Its the Chorus package of 2MB for 24.99. But as the connection is out in the hall, i'd like to get a wireless router to be able to connect to the internet around the house.

Can anybody suggest any wireless routers? Preferably, as cheap and cheerful as they come. Its only a small bungalow so it doesn't need to be very powerful.

    Thanks in advance,

    Gina

    Hi Gina,

I am assuming that there is an ethernet socket on your wi-fi router (which you currently connect to your computer)

Cheapest is the FON router - 5 euros plus vat and packaging, about 17 euros all-in.

It transmits two networks - one for sharing your broadband, and one that is secure for your own private use.

There are also a range in Argos, but they're not particularly cheap, but they might be convenient.

Disclaimer: I am an adviser to FON, but everything I wrote above is still true!

I would stay away from "cheap and cheerful" for wireless routers. I've gone that route in the past and it will give you no end of frustration. It’s not just a question of power/range/functionality – some of the cheaper models can be very flaky (dropped connections, etc.) (my experience only)

    I'd recommend either
    • Spending a bit - Komplett.ie are selling Linksys routers for around €70-€80
    • Picking something up on ebay (can by tricky) or adverts.ie
    • Going for the Fon option. I do not have fon package but the router I have is the same model they distribute - it's pretty good.
    • Do Chorus provide an add-on wireless option?

Whatever you get, make sure you read up some reviews before buying.

Re the fon router, the router we now sell is one we make ourselves, rather than the Linksys or Buffalo models. It's a really nice router, and comes with a 2-year guarantee. The styling and electronics are great, as well as the price.

Yep, it will work, the same as any other wi-fi router. It just plugs into the ethernet socket on your NTL router.

    Features description is here:

There is a fairly independent review at

    http://fonblog.wordpress.com/2006/10/05/my-personal-indipendent-fonera-review/

The only drawback I can see for you is that it would use up your only ethernet socket on the NTL box and won't give you an extra one. If you are only going to be using wireless, then that won't matter very much.

It will also work well with other ISPs that don't give you a wireless router.

You can get the router at http://www.fon.com/

    Antoin.
