Team A have a 3rd and 5 on team B's 30. The QB passes and it's picked off. Team B run it back 40 yards to team A's 35. At this point, the QB make an heroic tackle and the interceptor fumbles the ball. Team A recover.

    Now what?

    Team A, 1st and 10 on their own 35
Team A, 1st and 40 on their own 35 (original target of team B's 25)
Team A, 4th and 40 on their own 35 (original target plus new down)

Definitely this one, as long as the QB tackles the interceptor while the ball is still live. i.e. before the defender goes down.

I remember a bizarre play from a Bears-Bucs game in the 80s: QB threw an Int, DB began his return and decides to lateral the ball to a teammate as he's tackled. WR intercepted the lateral and scored a TD!

Moral: the ball is always live until the player in possession goes to ground or steps out of bounds.

    Absolutely.

Once the defensive back has clear control of the ball after the interception, his team then has possession.

Once he begins to advance the ball and then fumbles the ball is fair game. Whoever recovers the ball at this point will maintain/regain possession at the point of recovery.

In this case, Team 'A' takes the ball 1st and 10 on their 35.
