The lobby group for alternative carriers ECTA (European Competitive Telecommunications Association ) will call for powers enabling the functional separation of incumbents at a public hearing on the Review of the Communications Framework, to be held in Brussels on 10 October. The group wants all telecommunications regulators in Europe to have the power to make functional separation, similar to BT's Openreach unit. ECTA believes functional separation to be an important additional measure in securing effective implementation of the existing communications framework. ECTA's managing director Steen Clausen said that there are many cases where incumbents are holding Europe back by dragging their heels on opening the market. Europe could be losing as much as EUR 13 billion in investment due to regulators not being able to open markets, according to Clausen.

We all know how well the "separation" works here. eircom Wholesale cut off Smart customers according to a plan with lists drawn up last monday.

eircom Retail Winback staff were immediately informed by eircom Wholesale of who was cut off and were on their doorsteps within hours , sometimes less than an hour.

Yet Comreg pretend they are separate . Whats the point giving Comreg more 'powers' anyway becuase they are a failed institution with an inbred culture of uselessness and of kowtowing mindlessly to eircoms wishes ????

Hand all regulation in Ireland over to Brussels itself right now I say.
