He has made a U-Turn, but at least he's made a good decision. A bit of stability in the middle of the park will take the pressure of a shaky looking defence at the moment.

Carsley will just sit in front of the centre backs and mop up any breaking balls. He's not afraid to tackle, which is exactly what we need at the moment. I saw very little battle in our midfield against cyprus.

I've seen every everton game this season and he is in great form. Hopefully that oozes out into the rest of the team....

I can't believe the day has come where I'm rejoicing that Carsley is back in the Irish team. Desperate times call for desperate measures however.

I can still see it all going horribly though but there's always hope. It might be worth getting up at 4.30am for.

I have never heard centre half referring to a centre midfielder before. I used to play centre half when I was a kid and I was in the back four. Wikipedia (which I know isn't 100% reliable) describes it as.....The job of the centre-back — also called centre-halves or central defenders — is to stop opposing players, particularly the strikers, from scoring, and to bring the ball out from their penalty area. But then it also mentions something about the old centre half position moving to centre back when the full backs moved out wide.

Either way, let's hope Carsley can stamp some authority on the game. It's been non-existant of late.

Centre-half used to be the centre of the trio in the pre-1950 2-3-5 formation.

    So I propose we play

    Goalie 3

    McShane----O'Shea

    Quinn ---- Carsley ---- Kilbane
    Finnan --- Doyle --- Lee --- Keane --- Duff

    :)

silly argument, but Centre half when used rarely today is reffering to a CB and not a CM.
    Wikipedia wrote:
The job of the centre-back — also called centre-halves or central defenders — is to stop opposing players, particularly the strikers, from scoring, and to bring the ball out from their penalty area. As their name suggests, they play in a central position. Most teams employ two centre backs, stationed in front of the goalkeeper. There are two main defensive strategies used by centre backs: the zonal defence, where each centre back covers a specific area of the pitch, and man-to-man marking, where each centre back has the job of covering a particular opposition player.

Centre-backs are often tall, very strong and have a good heading and tackling ability. An ability to read the game well is also a distinct advantage. Sometimes, particularly in lower leagues, centre-backs concentrate less on ball control and passing, preferring simply to clear the ball in a "safety-first" fashion. However, there is a long tradition of centre-backs having more than just rudimentary footballing skill, enabling a more possession-oriented playing style.

The position was formerly referred to as "centre-half." In the early part of the 20th century, when most teams employed the 2-3-5 formation, the row of three players were called halfbacks. As formations evolved, the central player in this trio (the centre-half), moved into a more defensive position on the field, taking the name of the position with them.

Good examples of centre-backs in the modern game include Alessandro Nesta, John Terry, Fabio Cannavaro, Lilian Thuram, William Gallas, Lúcio, Carles Puyol and Roberto Ayala

EDIT: Apols, didnt notice Skittlebrau's reply

    Kelly---McShane---O'Shea---Finnan

If by typical you mean a miracle, then yes Pighead agrees with you 100%.

It really is a shocking injury list Stan has to contend with. Both centre backs, 1st and 2nd choice goalkeepers and half the midfield, not to mention Kevin Doyle. Looks like Clintons gonna get a start again. Clinton if you're reading this, you owe us big time.

I dont give a fcuk anymore what the score is just as long as we dont experience that freak show again that was Saturday night.

BTW Who are we going to play in goal? Anymore injuries and it will be Staunton playing in goal for us!

What a great situation we find ourselves in. Personally I think the fans should just point and laugh when the 'team' walks out tomorrow night. We are going to get a kicking at home tomorrow and tbh I dont know who to blame. Both the players and the manager need to know how the fans really feel when they take the pitch tomorrow.

Another thing I've noticed is that Ian Harte is in several people's teams. Why the heck isn't he in the squad? He's a natural left-back and is now playing regularily in Spain's top flight!

He's played as regularly in the Spanish top flight as I have this season  He's injured.

    Team is looking like

    Colgan
    Kelly - McShane - O Shea - Finnan
    A.Reid -- - Carsley - Kilbane --Duff
    Morrison - Keane

Which is probably actually better than the 11 we put out against Cyprus bar maybe McGeady for A.Reid purely because Reid isn't 100% match fit.

God knows what our subs bench looks like....

    Ronnie O Brien (Dallas)
    Wes Houlihan (Blackpool)
    Stack (Reading)
    Hunt (Reading)
    Long (Reading)
    McCarthey (Lecister City)
    Gamble (Cork City)
    Trundle (Swansea)
    Lawerence (Sunderland)

they should all be in the squad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,836 ✭✭✭Vokes

Finnan is wasted at LB, but then he hardly did himself any favours at RB on Sat.

With Carsley at DM, its down to Kilbane to dictate midfield and play some killer through balls for our front men :)

Looking forward to seeing how McShane gets on tomorrow (he's from my neck of the woods).

We are screwed on Wednesday, anyone should be able to see that no matter how much of a blind optimist they are. It might not be as bad as the Cyprus game as the players will surely try to restore some measure of dignity, but the Czech's will win by a couple of goals, easily.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,907 ✭✭✭LostinBlanch

THe only pity about the injuries is that it gives that f*ckwit staunton another excuse. If we had a full squad we would still turn in a crap display seeing as we have no one capable of actually managing the team.

Did anyone hear him on the radio saying that no matter what happened he wasn't going to go?

Bollocks to that if he had any sense of honour he would go.

I think if Carsely starts, Staunton loses any remaining credibility.

By excluding him, he has effectively said, "what we have here is better for us" - which should still be the case even after injuries. If he now starts Carsley, it begs the question, why wasn't he in the squad ahead of the lads who are being left on the bench instead of him? To which Stan won't have an answer.

I'm still not sure if he should go, I wonder will the disruption of replacing a manager now cause even more havoc with the squad, that said, if he tries to pin any of the blame of tomorrows loss on Carsley, or plays the "I did things your way and we still lost" card, then he should be banished from the country, not just fired.

Incidently lads, this should have gone in the Ireland-Czech thread.

BaZmO surely you've seen enough of Morrisson to realise he is one of the most inconsistent players out there. He is as likely to have a stormer tomorrow night as he is to have a mare. Can't find a link for the magnificent volley he scored against Coventry last week but it was a work of art.

See Lee Carsley is our saviour now? Jesus, where did it all go wrong?
He's our saviour because he's the only Irish player that can play in what is, imo, the most important position in the team. Douglas could play there too and should have played against Cyprus but why should he with Carsley available?

We might aswell have started Duff and Robbie Keane in the centre against the Czechs. Absolutely woeful midfield which lost us the game before it started.

A good point was made on the last word: why isn't McPhail in the team alongside Carsely?

Being realistic, I think that the next mach, even without Stan, would be a tall order.

Being realistic, I think that the next mach, even without Stan, would be a tall order.

I'm a big fan of McPhail, I thought his performances at Forest were mammoth at times. That said, even with his improvements in defensive duties, he is a luxury player. at the moment, we have a good deal of attacking options in Steven Reid, Andy Reid, McGeady and dare I say it, even Kilbane. Arguably, Andy Reid can pass the ball as well as McPhail.

While I can see the merits of having him in a team against the like sof Cyprus, given what happened to our midfield on Saturday, a player like McPhail isn't an option against the Czechs.

Personally out of the fit Irish players we have to call up, I'd like to see Delap and Carsley in the centre, it clooks like it will be Reid, Kilbane, Carsley and Duff - I'm not sure that is enough for a rookie defence and strong czech midfield.

I'm merging this with the Czech - Ireland thread, seeing as it is taking much the same course.

Off topic I know but I had to post this:
A seven-year-old boy was at the centre of a courtroom drama yesterday when he challenged a court ruling over whom should have custody of him.

The boy has a history of being beaten by his parents and the judge initially awarded custody to his aunt, in keeping with child custody law and regulations requiring that family unity be maintained to the degree possible.

The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him more than his parents and he adamantly refused to live with her.

When the judge then suggested that he live with his grandparents, the boy cried out that they also beat him.

After considering the remainder of the immediate family and learning that domestic violence was apparently a way of life among them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to propose who should have custody of him.

After two recesses to check legal references and confer with child welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to the Republic of Ireland soccer team , whom the boy firmly believes are not capable of beating anyone.

on the other hand, i play centre half and i definately play in the middle of the pitch.

of course, i play hockey, none of your girley diving here matey :)

so as far as im concerned, hes a bloody centre half :)

hes also not who id want as my midfield general.
i think im going to be washing my hair tomrrow come game time. i actually feel much the same way about this game,l as i do when i watch the office.

Well my point was somewhat tongue in cheek. Had he left Carsley out, or kept him on the bench, then I could at least say, he has a plan, noone els ein the universe can see what it is, but he has something laid out.
