After upgrading to a new Dual Layer drive, I'm trying to put my old NEC DVD-RW drive into an old PC.

The problem is, the old PC is running Win98se and I can't find a suitable driver for it anywhere (have tried NEC, Driverguide.com and Dell)

Can anyone tell me if I do indeed need a driver for this drive to work under Win98se and perhaps suggest where to look?

    Thanks for any advice.

You shouldn't need drivers for optical drives, though I can't remember what kind of support Windows 98 has for DVDs, if any.

I have DVD-RW on an old Windows 98 (First Edition) machine, recently put the SE upgrade on it and it works fine. You shouldn't need any driver as mentioned. Just use the software that came bundled with it (if any). Just pop it in and make sure the jumper settings at the rear of the drive are set correctly. Does it show up in My Computer or Device Manager?

    Hi Ruu,
yeah it shows up with the yellow "don't know what this is" icon.
It came as part of a Dell system with Win Xp so I have no drivers for it.
Been into the Bios of the 98se machine, but can't see anything amiss.

    Have you tried;
isolating the drive on the IDE cable
    replacing the IDE cable
    changing the master/slave/cable select settings

Also what chipset is the 98SE box running on ?

I'll have a go using a new ribbon cable tonight.
Think I have the DVD-RW set as slave so I'll toy around with that too.

    Chipset: 1. Intel® 810 AGPset; AC 97
    2. Chipset with Built-in Enchanced Graphics Engine

Processor: Socket 370 for Intel® PPGA PentiumIII Celeron™ Processor 1.

I/O: 2 x Ultra DMA 33/66 Bus Master IDE ports on board

    Thanks ;)
