    Hi all,

Ive had problems starting my 1.4 petrol 306 for a while.
It came to a head when I left the lights on and killed my battery.

After replacing the batt the lights came on my nothing started. Bad.

So lots of checking, one starter motor and one alternator cable later it starts first time. Good.

But not quite, after starting if I release the key from the furthest right position it dies.

It will only run if I keep the key turned all the way to the right

    Can anyone help?

I dont think its a fuel blockage but im completely stumped.
Ive been told to check the earths on the car

As ever any help is very very much appriciated.

You need a good auto electrician. I'm not sure where you are, but I have used Hamiltons in Dublin 8 and found them to be very good and pretty reasonable. Their number is 01 4755157. Hope this helps.

Might it be an immobiliser issue?. Would the it kick in when battery disconnected??. what year is the car?

It sounds to me like that starter was not necesary, but an ignition switch is.
btw, when you hold the key in this position does the starter motor not stay engaged?. if so, that will kill your new starter pretty fast.

    Hi all,

After switching out the ignition switch the problem was still there.
Im thinking now the problem lies with the engine ecu unit.

Jesus, I would imagine your started motor is on its way out if you keep it in the far right position.
Can you not hear the starter motor grinding?

check your inertia switch is open - look under the bonnet, on the passenger side at the back of the engine (running along the chassis leg) there is a round red switch (around half the size of a "d" battery) - push down on it and try starting it then
